I am a high school junior, and I was just wondering if colleges like to see volunteering or working during the summer. I have been and am currently looking into both. I figure they would probably want volunteering because you are doing service for free but i would like to get a job to help out my family and also save up because college aps would be expensive.

I’m a junior going to be a senior and during the summer I umpire. I make 40 a game so during the school months is when I do my community service cause I make enough during the summer that i don’t need to work during school. it works out great for me. for u i would do some of both.

Service isn’t THAT important on your application. It’s good if colleges can see you care about the community and others. That doesn’t mean you need to take trips to third world countries and spend hundreds of hours volunteering over the summer. If you’d like some money, just take a job! Work experience looks great on an application, especially if you’ve never worked in a professional environment before. At your age, it’s not like they’re going to work you 40 hours a week anyway- you’ll still have much free time to do random volunteering opportunities here and there if you feel inclined to do so.

Alright Thanks guys, i still plan on volunteering over the summer to get that mix of both but thank you guys.

wait, are you low income?? If so, get a job. On your application, put that you have to work in order to support both yourself and your family. Even if its not true, it looks really good. Talk about the experience as well.
