Which degree has a brighter job prospects? It seems as if a lot of comp sci majors go into software engineers job, but would it help if a degree was tagged with comp eng. What would employers from major tech companies like to see? A focus on Comp Eng AND Comp Sci or solely just SE?
Generally, which major has greater potential?
Whichever you enjoy and do best at, that is what you should do.
Try both and see which you like better.
Computer engineering is kind of the jack of all trades degree within the computer/tech fields. You’ll be taking enough computer science classes to be able to program along with enough electrical engineering classes to understand what’s physically happening in computer hardware. I know a lot of CE majors that now do pure software, others go into firmware, and a handful end up in hardware. The way I see it, a CE degree would give you the option of going into firmware/hardware which would be difficult with a software engineering degree. There are definitely more software/computer science jobs out there than firmware/hardware but it does really depend on what you like better.
