I asked this question in a different thread, but thought that I'd ask it in it's own thread. My daughter is currently majoring in civil engineering (specializing in environmental engineering - certificate program). Does anyone have an opinion as to what the job prospects look like for an environmental engineer two or three years down the road? I know that jobs in civil engineering have been rough with the downturn in the economy. Thanks!

Environmental has been both good and bad. In the public sector, environmental engineering jobs affiliated with civil projects (wastewater/sewage systems, land disposal, etc) has been hit pretty hard. The government tried putting a bit more money into this area but not as much as it should have. However, with the rising restrictions placed on private companies to conform to government regulations, environmental engineers working for the private sector (including contract work) has been getting more prominent.

In the future, I think with our global need for a cleaner environment will boost environmental engineering jobs but that’s my own thought.
