Jobs at UCLA

well it looks like i will be receiving zero financial aid because i am not elligible to apply for fafsa. This sucks a lot because my family is on a very very very low income. anyway...i was wondering how difficult it is to balance out academics and a job at ucla. If i work at ucla (store, cafe, etc)...are the schedules flexible with my class schedule? How much is the pay? I'm a music major so i am required to take part in performing groups and etc.

What do you mean you are not eligible to APPLY for fafsa? I thought everyone could apply.

Low income people are the ones that get the aid

i am not a permanent resident nor a citizen. My family's petition for permanent residence was accepted. I recently got my social security and work permit...i am waiting for my green card to come. THEN i can apply for fafsa..but obviously it will be after the March 2nd deadline. My green card is going to come around June/July ish (reasonably). According to UCLA's financial aid website i will be able to apply for limited federal aid (not calgrant)...anyone have an idea how much "limited" is considered?

Fire - Eligible to receive and Eligible to apply was what struck me as odd because I never heard of anyone not eligible to apply.

If you don't get cal grant, you can still get a nice penny. I don't have any cal grants but I received a university grant of 9k.

What I would do if I were you is call the financial aid counselor that deals with your financial aid package (determined by your last name if I recall correctly) and explain your situation and see if you can get some aid.

Also, I think you can still apply for FAFSA when you get your green card. I remember my friend didn't file in time for March 2nd, but told me that there was another date that you could turn it in (<a href="http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before003a.htm#federal_aid)%5B/url%5D">http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before003a.htm#federal_aid)</a>. NOT entirely sure though. Just throwing out random things that may help :(

I wasn't referring to you, I was confused as well.

bruin cafe is incredibly flexible. pay is 8.25/hr min 12 hrs a week

Just curious, but what percentage of students would you say hold a job, and also, are they easy to come by? and how workable is it academically (provided you're a normal person who actually wants to enjoy college not work and study 24/7)?
I personally want to hold off getting a job as long as possible, but it may be unavoidable depending on how much my parents are able to pay >.<

Trust me, anyone who works at BCaf is worth more than 8.25/hour.

If you work more than 15 hours a week and are a South Campus student, your life will be school-work-extracurricular activities-homework-study-sleep. Of course, the last point is optional, but recommended.

Try to snag a job where you'll get to spend a lot of time studying (front desk, for example). That'll help keep you from dropping dead from lack of sleep.

Access is not for everyone, but it's an easy job for decent enough pay...

I'm not sure I understand, but "eligible non-citizens" can also apply... are you sure you don't fall under that category? Check the requirements here...

i have the f-1 visa right now. I will be getting an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-551) sometime this year. This card will make me a permanent resident. Right now i am not a eligible non-citizen. this sucks but it's just for freshman year...i will be elligible my sophomore year.

Especially Brian Pugach.

*This is slightly off-topic... I know you guys are seniors in high school and getting ready to get to college and so on... I highly recommend that you continue doing any of your ECs and other activities with a similar energy, drive, and passion. I kinda slacked off during the summer after senior year instead of getting more involved in my organizations to the extent that I could. Sure, duh, I was leaving school and moving but a lot of that experience could've transferred to the org's chapter here or various groups at UCLA. For the first two years of college, you WILL have stuff from high school on your resume. Continue working. Remain a strong candidate for whatever your future endeavors might be. Right now, I have whatever whatever HS stuff on my resume and am just building my foundation at UCLA in what groups I've involved in now. The high school resume and such have helped me a lot and are the focal points (since I'm only a 'member' of things I'm involved in now) for summer programs I've applied to. So, yeah, just head's up. ;)

i have a decent gpa (3.5, would have been higher if not for that douchebag biskup) and social life (yay for raids!) even with working 12 hrs/week. also lots of club involvement.

That's impressive moldau... especially considering you're an engineering student.

haha it just means the jobs are very workable
