Jobs

Are there any jobs that I could get in a law firm as a current undergrad-- Ill answer phones, make copies, whatever-- I just want to get an inside feel of a law office, and make contacts.

I am btwn my jun and sen yrs of College. (will be a Sen. by next semester) and have a 4.0 GPA. Any opportunities anywhere?

Sure, some law firm will let you intern, especially if you'll work for free.

lol, yeah, working for free is always good (unless you need to pay bills and/or room and board.)

I dont mind interning-- but it would be kinda difficult, since i pay my own tuition etc. Anything in the paid sector?

"Sure, some law firm will let you intern"

Very Possibly --it's a matter of researching firms.

"especially if you'll work for free."

Free work will make you far more appealing. Nonetheless, it does not mean that there isn't somebody out there that would pay you. It all depends on different factors (location, type of law firm, personal contact, etc.)

You could also try to get a job in support services: copy room, file room, ,mail room, etc.

It can be hard to even get a menial job at a firm unless you have connections.

You won't learn much working in the copy room, file room, or mail room. Making contacts is important once you are a law student, but as an undergrad, I can't see law office contacts being any better than banking office contacts. If you wish to be involved and more appreciated, I would suggest you go to where available labor is needed. In particular, you might want to contact your local legal aid office. Most are looking for help. You won't see high-class clients but you will see the mechanics of legal services.

Second that, legal aid is the way to go because you will be doing the same sort of work as a paid private client, but because it is a public office they need help.

Well razorsharp, it's nice to have contacts at any age. They get you jobs. All of my engineering friends, like most engineers, have parents or other relatives that are engineers and had internships waiting for them when they got through their first year. Most had lower GPAs than me.

I'm not complaining, I could have looked but my point is that if I had connections I could have been handed one. Now that I am looking into patent law my cousin is working in one of the top law firms in Chicago with a few of the top patent lawyers in the nation (he told me so :P). So if I wanted a job there all I'd have to do is ask. So connections at any age help.

P.S. I'm not saying one shouldn't earn an internship being I'd be damned if I passed up an opportunity, especially considering some of my friends GPAs. They'll need them.
