The social life @ Hopkins is much better than people make it out to be.

My suggestion is that if you don’t want to be accepted, you should ask to either a) withdraw or b) be put into the RD pool. There’s still time I’m sure.

Don’t apply ED and then wish you didn’t get accepted. Don’t be that person that applies ED somewhere and then wishes you were going somewhere else when the cards shake out. If you aren’t 100% you want to go to Hopkins, then I suggest making a change… NOW.

WealthofInformation:

Thanks for the advice. How would you go about withdrawing an application though?

Just call the admissions office and ask them how to withdraw or change to regular decision.

But I know for a fact that the social life and students at Hopkins are terrific! You should visit if you haven’t already…

I suggest calling the office too.

Essay formatting does not matter in the admissions review process. Italics will not impact your chances for admission.

No they do not. There is no pre-set Early Decision acceptance rate and it varies greatly year-to-year. It has never been 50%. Read this for more:
[Hopkins Insider: Early Decision: Is It Right For You?](http://hopkins.typepad.com/hopkins_insider/2009/10/early-decision-is-it-right-for-you.html)

If this is true then you should either (1) change your application from ED to RD, or (2) completely withdraw your application. Early Decision is not for students who hope they don’t get accepted.

To either change your status from ED to RD or withdraw your application, you must compose a letter to the Admissions Committee and fax it (410-516-6025) and mail it.

I applied ED, but I’m really really scared that my application is about to get rejected automatically. I’m a Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention, and thought that I also received a fee waiver, but I just learned that I actually do NOT get a fee waiver and didn’t send an application fee with my application. Do you think JHU will accept a check if I send it to the admissions office?? This is awful!

This is not something to be overly concerned about and it is something that can easily be fixed.

(1) Download this form: http://apply.jhu.edu/pdf/2010/application_fee_attachment.pdf
(2) Complete the form
(3) Write a check for $70 payable to Johns Hopkins University
(4) Write a simple note about why the application fee is late.
(5) Mail all of this to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions ASAP

We would never automatically reject a student for such a simple mistake.

Phew! Thank you.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

The reality is that I’ve wanted to go to Hopkins for almost two years. When I first visited I knew it was where I wanted to be. I fell in love with the campus, the atmosphere, and the academics as I researched the university in detail.

My decision to apply ED was a VERY calculated decision, contemplated over months and months and months. Last week I just got a case of the “freak-outs” after some students telling me that it was a terrible, terrible decision to apply.

In retrospect, it’s ridiculous to let a few anecdotal stories negate more than a year of eagerly desiring to go to Hopkins (and working very hard to improve my grades). I just freaked out last week about, well, everything involving college. We’re all entitled to at least one of those, right?

So, in summary, thanks for the advice. I just needed a few days to get my head back on straight. I’d be ecstatic to attend Hopkins, and very disappointed if I did not get in.

And of course, good luck to everyone else!! Hopkins is a fantastic school.

…I’m assuming there’s no way these boards influence admissions?

No, they wouldn’t influence admissions. You can just get really good advice, and calm your nerves before Dec. 15. Good luck!!

unless you put your sn for CC on your app, I don’t see how they would affect admissions lol…

Yeah, that would be awful if the admissions saw my application and said, “Oh, here’s that flaky applicant who forgets and freaks out about everything. Definitely not JHU material.”

lol. I think the majority of CCer’s “freak out” more often than the typical student.

Definitely. Now that I have my application in, I’m freaking out more and more. Finally looking into backups for my expected rejection in December. I probably should have done this a while ago! (Still trying to stay in the baltimore area. Loyola perhaps?)

Yeah, I think the ED process makes Nov 1 - Dec 15 the longest month and a half ever. And ditto with the back up schools. I hear Loyola is good. But, I certainly hope you get into JHU!

Oh man, I feel so awful. I know how much interest plays a role in admissions, and I’m really regretting freaking out. lol, I can just imagine them looking at the application saying, “oh! He’s that pesky CCer that said he didn’t want to go here…”

This truly is the longest month of my life, and it’s only been 8 days! Loyola is practically right next to JHU. I want to go to college in Baltimore since it’s a cool city in my state, but it’s far enough from home where my parents won’t expect me to visit 24/7 (My mom wants me to go to FCC or Hood College, since thats where she went and she knows I can get a scholarship, but there’s no way I’m staying in my town when I can move out and get more freedom)

I feel like my alumni interviewer didn’t really get how interested I am in the school. He kept telling me, “Well, if you don’t get in I’m sure you’ll do well somewhere else.” And the more I think about it, the more I think he was implying, “With your mediocre accomplishments and lack of interest, you’re really not JHU material; try Towson.”

umm i don’t know where you heard that interest plays a role in admissions because it doesn’t…

I agree with you on how ED process makes Nov 1 - Dec 15th the longesttt time period ever! It’s only been 8 days since Nov. 1st but it went by sooo slowly! =(

Only 36 more days! Some how that makes it seem so much shorter. In 36 days I’ll see if I need to rush an application to Loyola and UMD.

What did you all get on your SATs?

EDIT: Now I’m really glad this won’t contribute to my application review. They don’t need to know about my awful skills regarding basic math.
