Johns Hopkins ED Applicants Thread

syc652, i noticed it too! =) the blue stand out so much and it’s such a pretty bluee

the academics blog is really informative and pretty funny =D
there are so many majors!

Just got home from hanging out at JHU. Sooo beautiful…I love living by baltimore, but living in baltimore will be so much better :)

Aww, I live in NYC, I didn’t even get the chance to visit.

For Hopkins, does everyone automatically get an alumni Interview? I haven’t been called…

I guess this is the new Academics Blog:

[– JHU Academics Blog --](http://hopkins.typepad.com/academics/)

Very cool!

lisabu: you have to request one. go online (um. ED rounds are over though) and sign up.

I’m a former New Yorker (moved to NJ several yrs ago), but honestly, even I have to agree that Baltimore is definitely a charming city.

wait, ED rounds are over? I still have an alumni interview this Wednesday…

Information on off-campus alumni interviews:
[Hopkins Undergraduate Admissions :: Visit :: Off-Campus Events :: Alumni Interviews](http://apply.jhu.edu/visit/aluminterviews.html)

One must requesting an alumni interview by completing an online form. The deadline for ED applications to **request **an interview was November 6. The ED interview deadline was just to request an interview, you may still have your interview after that date.

oops, yeah that’s what I meant. I wrote “rounds” instead of “deadline” heh.

My alumni interviewer stressed the fact that since interviews are not mandatory and he is only an alumni, he is not certain how much merit they hold concerning ones acceptance. I’m not sure it’s a make or break decision, just an extra little thing to help Admissions get to know you.

How many of you are planning on submitting suplemental information if deferred to Regular decision? I’m planning on a ED rejection, but from the time since I sent my application to December 15th, I’ll have at least an additional 75 hours volunteering.

Can supplemental information (extra letter of recommendation, semester grades, test scores, statement of interest, extra volunteer hours) really have an impact on RD admission?

I heard it’s supposed to be informative and isn’t supposed to be the tipping point in a decision…they didn’t have anyone for interviews in my area:( lol why are you planning on a rejection…be positive! What will be, will be…and yes supplimental materials help (specifically semester grade are importante) ohh wow that’s a sign that the spanish classes are working! I’m so excited for decisions in a month:)!!!

I heard JHU is a place where you’re glad that you got in but regret that you went there because of the grading system, especially in science classes.

Good luck to you all! I’m not smart enough to get mostly As in a place that makes vast majority of classes in C averages filled with very bright students.

Nah, gtgen, have hope!
melin, have you seen JHU Interactive? I used to agree with you on those points, but after reading about actual students who go there and love it, it seems like a great place to balance work and play. And besides, if it’s graduate school you’re worried about, they definitely know how tough it is at JHU, without the grade inflation at places like Harvard and such.

Not really, but I never said JHU is bad either!

I can’t believe for a second every class is graded down.College science classes are very complex and there tend to be lower grades in those kind of classes…maybe the curves aren’t always so generous but I am sure with hard work it’s we are all capable of pretty good grades…anyways it’s all about the education and besides graduate school know the rigor of JHU.

I’m sure they do, and, no, I did not say “every class” I said “vast majority.” Majority is 51%+. Vast majority would be 80%+. And how many classes do JHU offer?

hundreds of classes? All I said was that the science classes would probably be graded on a “less forgiving” curve?Plus, you seem like you like JHU but are hesitant to apply because of that fact that you have heard it is hard to get good grades…well I am sure this is the case if one doesn’t work as hard as is needed by the course. And a “good grade” in high school and college I suspect are different…apply if you believe JHU is a fit for you…Don’t let this get in the way.Top schools tend to, in general, be harder to good grades in regardless because there is a higher expectation.Gotta love working hard:D

You must be a genius if you can judge how hard I work in real life just from reading my posts in this thread.

You got no idea. I’m a senior student in IB and I have no interest in JHU whatsoever. Prefers Emory and Rice. Emory still kills you in science but at least they don’t screw you over deliberately like JHU. I need the pressure to keep me alive; I slack off when there’s barely any work to do and that’s not good. But I’m not willing to pull loads of all nighters and can’t even pull off an A or B+ when I could do it someplace else and learn the same thing.

I don’t mind doing 9 hours of homework a day but if I have to do 9 hours to get a C or B I might as well go to a state college and get an A instead with higher GPA and better transcript to apply for graduate school.

So then why are you posting on the JHU ED Applicants thread complaining about grade deflation? Clearly the 1,000+ people who fulfill the title value the incredible educational opportunities of Hopkins over a couple tenths of a grade that will be corrected anyway by graduate schools’ gpa recalculation formulas.
And NOT trying to ■■■■■, but being on the IB track does not necessarily beget good work habits/exceptional academic success.

:( …lol I’m a senior in IB too…But honestly you are being quite snappy.I never implied you were lazy(how could I assume such as thing. In fact, I assumed quite the opposite) but you did however post you that did not want to apply because of the grade reputation(I assumed you were worried but were on this forum because you like JHU seperate from its sometimes horrifying MYTHS) (JHU doesn’t try or want to “screw over” its students lol)
