Johns Hopkins vs Columbia - Undergraduate

Hello everyone!

I am grateful to say that I have been accepted to both Johns Hopkins University in Maryland (where I have family and know the area) and Columbia University here in New York. Before I heard about my decision for Columbia I was pretty committed to Hopkins. But, now I’m conflicted and would like to hear some opinions on which school would be better for me as an undergrad. I want to major in Medicine/Literature (a major both colleges have), following a pre-med track, with an end goal of being a cardiologist.

I really appreciate any positive feedback, thank you very much !

@mahc23 a little more info about yourself might be helpful. Do you want a big city or a small city? Is being able to use the entire city as a laboratory interesting to you? or do you not care whether you end up on campus for the overwhelming majority of your four years? what made you feel so dedicated to JHU in the first place?

Both are outstanding schools. Both will connect you to your ultimate goals. The question comes down to the kind of experience you’re seeking. And to answer questions about that, you’ll need to be a little more specific :stuck_out_tongue:

@PennCAS2014 Thank you for replying ! I can surely share some more about myself. For one, I don’t mind having to stay on campus most of the time – I’m more of a reserved person. But, I would like to be able to go out with friends at times. Gaining real-world experience throughout college is very important to me; I want to be able to apply what I’m learning.

I grew up in NYC so I know how living in a big city is and it’s great, I love the hustle and bustle of it all, but I did want to go away for once.

That was honestly my biggest reservation with Columbia, I wanted to get away. I also didn’t think I would get in so it’s really thrown me off course.

As for JHU, I’ve always known that I want to be a doctor and I’ve kept track of the wonderful news/breakthroughs/findings from both the university and the hospital for quite some time now. I knew that Johns Hopkins could not just properly train me but bring out skills and knowledge from me that would truly help me impact the lives of people all over. That being said, I also know that most research institutions don’t pay much attention to their undergraduates.

Costs after financial aid???

Other than that, go visit both, and go with your gut. Both will prepare you equally well, but they have different overall environments.

@harvardandberkeley Columbia is giving me a full ride, and for JHU I would have to take out $3500 in loans per year – but those loans would surpass my billed expenses.

Thank you! That was my initial plan; I am doing an overnight visit at JHU this week and then one at Columbia in two weeks.

@mahc23 if you don’ t mind my asking, JHU and Columbia are some of my dream schools for premed and med school, I will cross that bridge when I come closer. I am an jnternational aplicant from India but still a US citizen. What kind of stats and ECs did you have. What courses, APs, etc. Did you take. If you could please share your statistocs and thoughts, it would be a great help. Thanks. I know both of these schools are extremely though to get into. If possible, could you please tell me where you felt you had strengths, weaknessws, and what you think got you accepted.

JHU is a grind for premeds, and while your stats are good, very likely your premed classmates will be much stronger than you are.

I think Columbia is a better choice.
