Johns Hopkins vs. Wesleyan vs. UCLA pre med

I got into JHU (Neuroscience), Wesleyan (Molecular Bio & Biochem), and UCLA (Molecular Bio & Biochem) for pre med. I couldn't find too much info on Wesleyan and I don't want to make a decision before I know I'm making the right choice! I'm currently leaning towards JHU. I love Hopkins from what I have researched about it, but could anyone tell me a little more about pre med at Wesleyan? And also let me know which one you would choose out of the three? Thanks! (I'm in-state for UCLA but cost would not be a deciding factor, just an added benefit)

you might wanna ask your wesleyan specific question at the wesleyan forum, OP.

The rep at JHU is that the pre-meds often don’t make it, but that could be said of pre-meds everywhere. Still, there’s something concerning about this reputation when it’s combined with stories about JHU grade deflation. UCLA has an excellent reputation and produces lots of pre-meds. I don’t know about Wesleyan.

One question I would consider if I were you is at which school will you get the highest GPA. Med schools may be more likely to take a Wesleyan app with a 3.8 than a JHU or UCLA app with a 3.2. GPA isn’t the only criteria surely, but reputation of the school matters much less than you think it does. The med schools want to see what YOU did not where you did it. Is there evidence that you’ve mastered this difficult material and are prepared for med school? Give me Wesleyan for this, I think, or at least UCLA rather than JHU.

A second important consideration is whether you’ll be better off with less debt than more going to med school because med school isn’t cheap for anyone. You could easily leave med school with $400K in debt, and that kind of mortgage has a serious impact on career, family, and retirement decisions. Would minimizing that debt be wise?

A third consideration is that you might not continue as a pre-med after a couple years. Where would you want to be in school then? Lots of pre-meds are perfectly happy leaving that dream behind. Which school has better non-pre-med programs, just in case?

i’d suggest the OP visit. It’s not prudent to take advice from these forums - especially when people are comments on schools they have no experience with such as the above poster

Also, make sure to take finances into account.

Are you going to Wes fest?

Pre med at Wesleyan should not be a worry. Maintain a high gpa and score well on the med boards and you have a 90% chance of gaining admission somewhere. The real question is whether you want a small college environment or a big college environment? If you’re not sure, then you probably need to visit.

Perhaps it should be? Med school is extremely expensive. It might be wise to try to limit as much debt as possible in your undergrad before you go there. I’m biased toward research universities, so I’d pick UCLA or JHU. My advice would be to look at your financial aid packages and decide from there. They’re both excellent research universities that are focused on the health sciences, so you can’t go wrong.

the undergrad experience probably couldn’t be more different among these 3 schools. What were your thoughts in picking these 3? Revisiting the initial criteria you used in deciding where to apply might help you figure out which is now the best fit.
