Johns Hopkins - What are typical campus jobs?

As part of my son's financial aid offer, he was provided a campus job. I know this is something that we will wind up discussing and finalizing with the financial aid office. If the amount of work per week is reasonable, it is a way to offset a little of the annual cost.

Can anyone provide some examples of the type of work that is typical (for Johns Hopkins)? is it regular work, every week, or perhaps periodic activities through the year, maybe in support of events that occur on campus? I'm just trying to get an idea how this is handled... Thanks for any feedback...

Many people work in Barnes and Noble, and many people work in individual departments. I have a friend who usually works about 10 hours/week or so with the physics department.

how much do we get?

I’m guessing by campus job, you mean federal work study? There are tons of jobs available for students with work-study (and still a lot even if you don’t have work-study). During the first week of school, running concurrently with our Student Activities Fair, there is a massive student jobs fair where all sorts of departments, programs, etc come to recruit undergrad workers. You can get jobs in academic departments, in research labs, at the hospital etc etc. (The reason that people want to hire work study students is that they only have to pay some fraction (I think 30%?) of the wage and the federal government pays the rest). My understanding is that when they provide you with $X of money through federal work study, it means you can find any work-study job and work and earn up to that amount. If you want to work less and not make the full $X, that’s okay, but you can’t make more than $X from work study (though you can hope to convince your employer to keep you as a regular employee when you use up your work study)

Have your son check out the [Student Jobs website](http://www.jhu.edu/stujob/). However, note that they are far far fewer jobs listed right now for the summer than at the start of the regular semesters

Is it hard to get a cafe job? I worked at Starbucks for almost a year and love itttt… I’d love to be able to work on a coffee bar again…

Cafe Q in the library and there are 2 starbucks near campus…
