Journalism School Assured Admit Program?

Was anyone else offered a place in the program, or the similar program for the business school? I'm looking forward to being able to take journalism classes before actually entering the school my junior year, but now that I am looking at registering for classes I am slightly confused. One email I have received says word-for-word, "Additionally, we also guarantee you a place in a special section of news writing (JOMC 153) during the fall semester of your first year at Carolina and in a special first year journalism seminar during the spring semester of your first year."

To me, this sounds like the class I take this fall will be an individual section of JOMC 153 with only freshmen in this program. However, as I am putting classes in my shopping cart to prepare for CTOPS, I don't see any section that looks like it has been set aside or is abnormal in any way. Did I misinterpret this email, or does anyone have any insight into how I can find out the days and time for this class? I realize I may have to just wait and see when I'm at CTOPS, but I'm trying to make registering for classes while there as low-stress as possible, haha.

My daughter received this in Fall 2009. You are correct in assuming that JOMC 153 will be an all freshman class with only the other journalism school assured admits. If you are not pre-registered for it when you get to your CTOPS just go to the journalism school and they will place you in the class. That’s what my daughter had to do during in her CTOPS session.

Oh wow. This program must be new. When I took JOMC 153 a few years ago you had to be sophomore to take the class. I’m not sure about how to register for the special section of JOMC, but I know that you don’t have to be a junior in the j-school to take journalism classes. I took several journalism classes during my sophomore year. I think the rule is that you can’t take over 9 hours of JOMC classes until you’re actually in the j-school, but that’s not really a big deal. I don’t think I took more than 9 hours of JOMC classes my entire four years.

Good luck with JOMC 153!
