Hello, my son will go to the Julliard Live Audition in NYC soon in March 2015. As a parent, I would like to know how to prepare his audition clothing. And usually how many people will be offered to audition and how many would get chosen to be accepted? What does the audition day look like? Thank you.
You should consider posting this in the music majors’ forum. The people there are very helpful and answer questions like this all the time!
Thanks. I did not know it.
Your son should dress as he would for any music audition (and of course for the weather–it could be snowing in March, so check the forecast before you leave.) As for the numbers, we don’t know what they are, but you can call or email the Juilliard admissions department and they will probably tell you. They are very helpful and nice to applicants and their parents. What does audition day look like? Crowded, exciting, busy. There will be info meetings for parents and tours conducted by current students.
It is very hard to say for certain how many kids will be accepted, because that varies from year to year, the number of kids admitted on piano depends on how many slots the teachers have, and generally, at Juilliard, they are done as a total number between graduate and undergraduate. I remember from our admissions workshop with the Juilliard admissions office Piano is very similar to Violin, they have many hundreds and hundreds of kids who apply, they pre screen and it is cut down , probably in the range of 100 students auditioning on piano. I also seem to recall that in the year I was at the admissions workshop, they said the admissions rate was probably near that of violins, which is usually 30-40 total, between undergraduate and graduate, but keep in mind that the number of slots, and the ratio between graduate and undergraduate slots, changes from year to year, so some years there may be more than the 30-40, some years a lot less. The ratio of undergraduate to graduate matters, if they admit a lot more grad students one year, it is harder to get in as a undergraduate, and vice versa.
As a result I agree with GH, call or e-mail admissions and ask, they will at the very least give you an idea how many piano slots are open.
As far as clothing, I wouldn’t sweat that too much, I wouldn’t tell the kid to dress in jeans and a sweatshirt, but wearing decent performance clothes, like dark pants, dress shirt, dark shoes would be fine, you don’t need to go crazy, some parents have their daughters in fancy gowns and the boys in tuxes and such, you don’t need to go that crazy:)
Thank you so much for both of your responses. It is very kind of you. The information is very helpful. Should my son wear a tie or bow tie? What colour is suitable? White shirt or grey shirt. He likes to wear dark grey shirt with black suit and burgundy bow tie. Would that be too formal? Also his shoes are black but quite bulky and cheap( $25, I recall). I read some threads that it is better to wear shiny black shoes…king of we don’t want to be too formal and not too lousy. Thanks again.
I read a thread (2006) that Julliard will have 2 rounds of audition then. Do they still do that now?
A dark grey shirt with a black suit and burgundy bow tie sounds nice. He should wear what makes him feel most comfortable, both physically and emotionally. I can’t imagine that his shoes will make a different as long as they are black. I don’t think there are two rounds of auditions for piano. Jazz, dance, and acting have callbacks, but call the office and ask. They’re really very nice.
I think that outfit will be fine:). As far as I know, Juilliard does not do callbacks on auditions, Curtis does that because they don’t pre screen and do open auditions. As GH said, call or e-mail the admissions department, they are very good at answering questions:)
Thank you so much!! Really appreciate.
