Jumbo Parents

I agree with tolstoy - missing the admitted students day is no big deal if DC is not still deciding whether to attend. Definitely try to de a pre-orientation program - great way to start their social circle. Also, join the Facebook group - student organizations will start posting info on their various organizations over the summer. The first-year seminar classes are also a great way to get integrated fast. Both my DDs did student led Perspectives classes and enjoyed them immensely.

Thank you for the feedback. She is committed to Tufts and looking forward to it.

@tolstoy2‌ @1012mom. When is admitted students’ day? have not seen any info about it?

April 17,18 and 25th. Schedule and sign ups for accepted students online at Tufts Admissions. They call it Jumbo Days- have fun!

My son was accepted ED1. He’s not planning on going to accepted student days. He’s very excited about starting Tufts but figures he’s 100% committed so why travel and have that expense.

@ncyankee‌, my youngest son was accepted ED2 last year & went to admitted students’ day. He got a great feel for the school, met some future classmates, and met a kid he decided to room with. They’ve been terrific roommates & will room together again next year. I went with him but we split up after the morning introduction. It gave him an opportunity to meet kids on his own while sitting in on professor lectures and at lunch. It was a fun day. Absolutely not necessary if the expense is too much but if you can swing it, it’s worthwhile.

One of the most impressive features of the day was listening during the morning introduction meeting to four students describe their Tufts experience. These kids were extraordinary. They blew everyone away.

@RenaissanceMom‌ Thanks for the input. Timing is just terrible. So we are going to skip it. He cannot get much more excited. Wish we could pull it off – never know maybe something will change.

Does anybody know if parents are allowed to go to a class on Jumbo Day?

I don’t think I count as a Jumbo parent, since my son will not attend Tufts. We were thrilled he was accepted: Since he attended a Gymnasium in Germany, he had no AP or school sports/letters (because none are offered), and very little in the way of ECs (because there’s no culture to support them). But, we got the FA letter yesterday: 3000 scholarship; 2000 work study – the rest in loans, which we’re not willing to take on, and won’t allow him to take on as a student. So, short story long, he’s going to an English-language BA program in Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Tuition? (Are you sitting down?) 4k in Amsterdam, 2k in Rotterdam. Have fun with Tufts! It would have been great!

Yes, parents can go to a class. You can go with your child or choose a different class that interests you. I remember me, my son and my husband went to 3 different classes. Btw these are not regular classes where you have other Tufts students. It’s classes created just for jumbo days.

We did the same…I went to a bio class & son went to a history &an English class. I skipped second class so I could buy some graduation present for him from the bookstore.

Congratulations to all of those new jumbos! My daughter is a freshman and loves, loves, loves Tufts!
However, she was recently diagnosed with mono and is really laid up.
Anybody have a child who has been through this at Tufts? Right now, I’m in search of a laundry service that will pick up and drop off at her room. Any suggestions? Thanks!

@Eurocar I’m not a Jumbo parent either but an accepted student. Funny first you didn’t think your S would get in because he lacks many things, but now you expect Tufts to pay for his education. Can Americans get a German uni degree for free? I don’t think so, even that the unis are free in Germany.
Here, the unis are not free. Whether your S come to Tufts or not, you should show some appreciation for the 3k scholarship and the 2k work study. Last time I checked, no one in Europe offer aids to American students.

@njmom666-I’m sorry about your daughter. I don’t have advice for you as I’m the parent of a DD just accepted. (We
are thrilled that she will be attending her dream school.) I would be very interested to hear how you feel the Health Services Dept. has responded to your daughter’s illness? Did they diagnose? I understand if this is too personal to discuss, it’s just one of the things I worry about. Did you preemptively fill out paperwork allowing access to her medical records while at school?
I have another unrelated question for you Jumbo Parent veterans: Which hotel is more convenient for move in day? We’ll be driving from Central New York and I’m looking at the Best Western Tria and the Hyatt Place Medford. Boston driving unnerves me. We always fly in and use the T. So I’m looking for something close with adequate parking that doesn’t cost a small fortune.
Lastly, my daughter and I will be attending Jumbo Day. We arrive April 23 and she’ll stay overnight in the dorms. Is anyone else attending?

My daughter and I are attending.

Lots of Jumbo parents stay at Hyatt Place Medford. Or La Quinta Somerville is an even cheaper option. Both not too far and no traffic either way, like potentially there may be in Cambridge or other areas. I liked La Quinta for the price and it is on the way to Target and across the street from Bed, Bath and Beyond, where we bought everything for the dorm.

@tolstoy2- thank you for responding! I’m going to look at La Quinta right now.
@wauswa-is your daughter spending the night on campus? I’m excited to make some parent friends! It’s been a long cold winter at our house. My daughter was accepted at Northeastern EA,University of Richmond RD, but Tufts was her first choice. After months of lurking on CC, I was convinced she wasn’t going to get in. I feel like we can finally breathe again #:-S

Hi Jumbo parents: Posted last year and appreciated your feedback. My son liked Tufts so much he went ED I - despite great hooks into some other awesome schools. He loved the culture and undergrad research opportunities amongst many other factors. Hope that he - and your children - make the Class of 2019 the best ever.

@Eurocar, that post seems a bit condescending, no?

@nsrsachit we are attending the first Jumbo Day as that is the only date possible for us. My daughter was admitted ED1. She visited several elite schools including two where she had a strong hook as a legacy( Dartmouth and Wellesley). We had to encourage her to visit Tufts, because she felt it was “too close to home”. Less than thirty minutes into the visit she said "this is it"I only post this, because I think it’s a fairly typical reaction of a kid with other choices who is captivated by the atmosphere on the Tufts campus.
