Jumbo Parents

Lee’s speech introducing the class had a few of the admissions staff in tears. It’s like my favorite thing all year.

Aside from the fact that my kid got a shout out, LOVED how Lee Coffin told the class their future partners/spouses might be in the audience, AND their potential mother-in-law. He’s a very gifted speaker. My older son, a college senior, said he felt so inadequate after hearing about all the accomplishments of the class of '16. Truly impressive.

LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! Just got back to San Diego tonight, and immediately looked up Lee’s speech and printed it to keep for my daughter, and for my husband to read who wasn’t there. It is wonderful. My own daughter said afterward- geez, how did I get in?? I am in awe that she gets to live and study there. THANK YOU TUFTS!!!

Where can you get this speech?

It’s here: [Inside Admissions Tufts University Admissions Department](<a href=“Welcome, Sweet Sixteen · Inside Admissions | Tufts Admissions”>Welcome, Sweet Sixteen · Inside Admissions | Tufts Admissions)

It really was a great day. It made it easier to leave my daughter, though I still miss her!

I want to know who the New Yorker is who performs with the Finnish metal cello band. It’s my son’s favorite band, (and he’s from NY), but it’s not him - he’s on a junior year abroad currently. Surely the band is - [Apocalyptica - Path [HD 720p] - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube) - and they are great! (Lee Coffin you should give them a listen!)

Hi Jumbo Parents,

Are there any parents on this forum who have kids that play pr played Tufts Varsity Tennis?
Are there any parents on this forum whose kids applied early decision?
Any parents who applied to Tufts as a “reach” and were admitted? If so, how hard was it for them?

If so, I am very interested in reading about their profiles.

I have a junior in high school who is very interested in attending Tufts. I don’t know her GPA but last year, as a 10th grader, she received all A’s and A+'s except in math (Alg 2/trig she received a B+). She also received a 4 on the AP World History exam. Until she takes the PSAT this month and the Sat, ACT, AP’s in the Spring, I don’t know if she will be a strong candidate for Tufts or not. This year, she is taking some tough classes including AP English, AP US History, Latin 2, Spanish 4 (with all seniors). She is also taking PreCalc and Chem. She also takes Community Health (the class will participate in numerous volunteer activities) and concert/marching band (trumpet). No lunch.

Add’l EC activities include Latin Club (secty), Spanish Club, Varsity Tennis (10th/11th), JV Tennis (9th), JV Basketball (9th).

We plan on visiting in the Spring and will reach out to the tennis coach at that time (maybe sooner). Any feedback/advice is greatly appreciated. I know it’s too early to determine what her chances are but am wondering if applying early decision and not requesting aid will significantly help her chances.

Honestly without any SAT or ACT scores there is no way to answer your question. My only suggestion to you is have her take all the tests in the fall and don’t wait for spring. Have her take November SAT and December ACT. You don’t have to wait for PSAT results. This way you’ll know if she needs any extra help prepairing for the spring SAT and be able to get her tutored if needed. Or she might just do amazing and be done.

Angel generally speaking applying early and not needing financial aid is a plus.

My son was a B+/A- student who tests well. (5’s on APs before senior year, 790 CR score.)He’s majoring in IR which requires 8 semesters of a language. He chose the most difficult one. He has found Arabic very difficult, but the rest of Tufts pretty managable. Unfortunately for him Arabic has meant that he didn’t have time to do as well as he could have in some of those other courses. (He’s gotten a lot of B+'s.) He says in retrospect he should have been a history major - he’d have been an A student. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

So, freshman Jumbo parents, now that it has been a couple of months, do your kids all feel they made the right choice with Tufts? Everyone happy?

Absolutely! Son loves it. He loves the kids, the teachers, the school. Pretty much everything. I’m looking forward to visiting weekend.

Same here - my daughter loves it. Definitely the right choice for her.

My son is deliriously happy. Absolutely the right place for him. The transition has been very smooth and he’s found the community very welcoming.

Parents Weekend can’t come soon enough!

Great! My D LOVES it too; got a job at the library, made it into Tufts Symphony Orchestra, and loves her healthy living dorm. She can’t believe she even considered any other schools! I am flying out tomorrow for the weekend- instead of coming Parents Weekend. Can’t wait!

D2 loves being a Jumbo as much as D1. She does not have enough time to do all the things she wants to do. Loves her classes, teachers, friends, etc. Admissions seems to do a very good job of picking kids who are happy at the school.

S knew from the start that Tufts was the place for him --and he reports now that he loves it even more than he thought he would!

Had an amazing weekend at Tufts with my D! 1 day seeing campus and Davis and Harvard Squares, 1 day in Boston and 1 day near beautiful Concord at Walden Pond, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Lousia May Alcott’s house etc. So much to do- amazing place! Have fun next weekend there everyone!

I want to thank whoever ordered the absolutely perfect fall weather for Parents weekend. It was wonderful to see my DDs, and to see all of the talented Jumbo kids singing, dancing, playing music and competing on the athletic field. I was again struck by how nice and supportive these kids are to each other, and how ridiculously happy they are with Tufts.

Tufts is the best! What a great weekend. I loved seeing all the parents hovering around! The women’s and men’s soccer team provided excellent entertainment in exciting wins!!! Go Jumbos!!!

1012mom - I couldn’t agree more. The weather was wonderful and it was great spending time with both kids. We invited my parents along and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. My father called afterwards to tell me how thrilled they were to see both D and S so happy, they clearly both made the right choice.
