About that sqrt(x) issue…

Try graphing y=sqrt(x). You do get a function: the graph passes the vertical line test. The domain is x>=0. If sqrt(x) had two values, one + and one -, the resulting graph would not be a function. It would be a “sideways” parabola.

Consider the function y = sqrt(x^2). Try graphing it and you will see that it is another way of stating a very familiar function, one with values >= 0…

Yeah I can back up pckeller. Talked to my math professor today, (he has a PHD), and he cleared up the whole issue with positive and negative square roots.

A square root always puts out a positive, we only tack on the +/- signs when we are solving for a specific number (hence the quadratic formula), not at any other time.

Can someone verify the airplane one? Was the greatest discrepancy between A and B also the greatest cost in A’s column?

Does anyone remember that question about the even and odd numbers where 3a was odd and b was even or something like that? What was the answer? I believe I picked choice A which was a+b, was that right? Do you remember the correct answer to that question?

Didn’t the question with the salad dressings ask for the total on the bottom row (chef salad I think?) and not the total of the right hand column? (Caesar or ranch? Can’t quite remember). I remember I put an answer that was 50 something, but it seems like here a lot of people put 80, which was the sum of two numbers in the right hand column. Since all 6 values equaled 200, and they said the right hand column’s dressing was 40%, than the total for the right hand column would definitely be 80. If I was the College Board, I would ask about the total of bottom row and then put the total of the right hand column to try to trick people into skipping the final step of the question. Can anyone corroborate this?

Was the answe to the airplane one also the highest value in A’s column???

@satanxiety it did ask for the total of the bottom row. i was really confused about how people got 80 but now i know. They just added the right hand column. you were supposed to add the bottom row. The right column does equal 80 but it asked for the bottom row so i dont think it is 80.
@meercat the answer was crew the choice a

I thought so as well good job

I just want my scores back already. :0 This is killing me.

Now be honest, and don’t try to act smart and say oh this was easy, or say this was really hard.
I want you compare the difficulty of June math section to other math section’s that you’ve taken. (Specifically Jan or march of this year). I honestly think that this math section was slightly more tricky, so i think -1 will be 770, -2 750 etc…
