June 2009 SAT Writing!

okay so it took me an hour to read the whole thing BUT! theres still no definite decision
to some of the question

the gold medal was

He (dont remember the name) was named the best athelete in the olympics, winning seven gold medals –> this just makes it award, he was named the best athalete by how?

I think its he was named the best ~~~~~by winning seven medals.

second to the last question, the use of however
what is the EXACT sentence?

and I am getting confused with the use of however with the King publishing something
-what is the answer to this one? this also had the use of however

what is the sentence with the pueblo family - population of 15 families?

what is the sentence with the nobel prize winner?

lions –> mountain lions are one of the ~ animals
out of the animals –> mountain lions are regarded as one group of animals --thats how I interpreted it

lets answer these five questions that are not definitely decided yet, and go home :)

Yeah that was my point exactly.

I don’t remember the piercing teeth question.

and how is there no error in the “course of”???

you don’t say i took a course of reading… it can be either about or on, but not of.

Piercing teeth is part of the list that describes the mountain lions, prior to the quote I provided for you. Some people put (B) as the error, which was “piercing teeth.”

OH:

DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER ANSWERS TO IMPROVING THE PARAGRAPH, 30-35, other than the last one. Which is Sentence 13 is the one after which you should insert the sentence provided?

Nothing relevant connects the “,” and “winning.”

um so with the gold medal question, is it by winning?

@redcatharsis

I don’t remember the d@mn sentence; that’s what I’m saying.
I don’t even remember what I put, but I know it was right b/c it was an easy one.

it said, mark spitz was the most celebrated athlete of the 1980 Olympics Games “by winning seven olympic gold medals”. or it would read, mark spitz was the most celebrated athlete of the 1980 Olympics Games", winning seven olympic gold medals".

i dunno, the first one sounds better.

the question that said
they were convinced of having no alternative but to blah blah blah
i chose the answer that said they were convinced that they would have no alternative but to blah blah blah
i wasn’t sure if convinced of was a correct idiom. what does everyone think?

i put “winning”

can somebody just answer ?

thanks mab and smarts, I really think that by winning is right, cause i took time to read the question over again

so can anyone explain to me the difference with the question with the second to the last (however) and the one with another however in question about King publishing smth?

I don’t really get what you’re saying here. The “by” is unnecessary.

But it doesn’t say “group.” So therefore the pronoun “one” MUST refer back to the antedecent “lions,” and you can clearly see the disagreement there.

I don’t remember the exact sentence; do you by any chance? It depends on the context.

You’re right; you don’t say, “I took a course of reading.” But “course of” is an idiomatic expression, such as, “In the course of history…”

Ya…in all honesty, I didnt even notice this “idiom error” when I was reading the sentence. Now you all are probably alot smarter than me so I may be wrong, but if I didnt even notice a slight problem with course of when I read the sentence, the phrase was fine in context.

It was “winning…” because every one of the answers had punctuation. You don’t need punctuation when you have by…more or less it fits in the category of repetitive.

And to whoever mentioned the colon part in this sentence. Present participles are never used with colons, only commas. Maybe with a gerund, it would work, but otherwise, it wouldn’t.

Also, I believe I only got 1 or 2 no errors. That’s how many there usually are anyway. Anything else is impossible for collegeboard because it’s unprecedented.

yeah i agree with masterus about the punctuation - the by choice wasn’t correct because the comma would still be there.

btw, for the “course of” question, i thought that we determined the sentence wasn’t talking about a course. I actually do remember (thinking back) that it had to do with a process.

As in:

“In the course of writing about their past, many club members, now in their eighties, are remembering stories from long ago.”

Something like that.

^^^ I agree that it was just “writing” by itself
For the “course of” question, “course of” was correct.

“by winning 7 gold medals” would only work if the sentence read:

"Mark Spitz BECAME a decorated olympic athlete…

BTW redcatharsis, if you don’t mind me asking, what did you make on the USHistory SAT 2?

Okay, that makes more sense because I don’t remember the exact wording of the sentence for the old people one.

so it was ,winning 7 gold medals?
