June 2010: International

Yeah, I did get an unusual number of NE’s, actually.

I got the question about the number of points in the rectangle wrong then, as I was careless and didn’t take into account that I have to add all the possible coordinates… :/

I think I was pretty good at sentence completion this time though…

Reading

Writing
William sisters–> title: champion sisters
Surprised they’re sisters –> Venus and Serena are sisters
Braces –> unsightly contraptions

add more on the writing …

I believe that your second one for math should be -2/3, not 2/3 (unless you meant the dash to be a negative, but I assume you were using it as you were previously). Since the gradients had to be equal, and the first was 2/3, and the second equation was 1 - cx, c has to be -2/3 for the gradient to become 2/3.

@afayyad…you’re talking about the 6th section…the williams’ one was the 6th section…anyhow…i remember getting around 5 no error answers in section 3 and around 3 in section 6…let’s see how it goes

ah alright got the numbers mixed up, my bad.

There’s on average, like 4 NE’s per writing section. Just about always.
Okay I got the 2.3 one correct, I remember it now - I’m just hoping I put -2/3 and not 2/3 and got that 800. I believe I did but I’m not sure. This is going to drive me nuts for the next 3 weeks.

About this question I think there’s an answer choice like: Future generations tend to forget (or ignore?) about the past. And i dont think it’s “they give themselves too much credit” as credit doesnt mean emphasis (emphasis is more appropriate in this situation)

Do you guys remember any other choice of this question? Somehow I can’t recall my answer for it…

for Sentence Com

Ravenous

Byzantine passage
-close knit -> what’s this??

there were choices lyk loss as well as gain, deplorable occurence but don’t remember other choices

do you guys remember what the other choices were?

Disclaimer: Most answers are phrased differently. If you can remember the exact words, please enclose it in quotation marks so people would know.

getmeinpls - that’s the passage about the new kid and how a group of friends found her interesting and so took her in… she didn’t expect them to but her everyday habits (which she considered ordinary) were peculiar to them.

kipling - can’t remember the other choices, but that was the question asking how the author of the 1st passage may respond to the author of passage 2. Passage 1 mentioned how biographers exaggerate stuff, passage 2 talked about how biographers intentionally highlight seemingly ordinary events, etc to make it more interesting.

Oh and please post if you have different answers so we can compare/discuss!

For the Chinese question about the mother feeling bad that she couldn’t help.
I put “points to mother’s effort to help” because the others are not backed up in the passage. The sentence about mother feeling bad come immediately before she talks about the mother giving her the phone numbers. So I think it is “points to mother’s effort to help”

Oh! also, wasn’t the fill in the blank question for the amazon “inaccessible” and something else? because I don’t recall the sentence talking about the amazon being pure or anything and the sentence did not blame the settlers for anything. Rather the sentence states that the settler were kept out because of the diseases and the lack of minerals(?) in the soil for farming. I don’t think it is “pristine and deterred”.

Pristine means ‘in its original state’, which would perfectly fit into the sentence, seeing as 1. The soil wasn’t fertile enough and 2. People were afraid of the diseases, so they were ‘deterred’ from visiting the place.

Yeah in the sentence completion question about amazon forest there’s an answer choice like inaccessible and… (can’t remember) but inaccessible can be easily eliminated since the forest is NOT inaccessible, it’s just uncultivated for some reason as indicated in the sentence.

09jhyang - what question are you talking about (from the Chinese origin passage)?

So far does everyone agree to the other answers? I’ll edit the post in a while and include pristine/deterred and ravenous.

there was also one SC question that had answer choice like
allure…facetious
I remember this because I got this wrong
the first blank DID NOT fit for allure because the sentence was like
Although the room(?) lecture(?) I don’t remember sth was strict, boring… this someone brightened the room by being humorous sth like that
I knew that facetious fit in but I didn’t know what allure meant so I just guessed this
anybody remember this question? I think there was a word like monotony or not…

and yeah I agree with pristine…deter
and I jhyang really?? I put emotional response… do you remember what the other choices were?

also for the squid passage
there was one question that asked what was the purpose of the passage
I don’t remember what I chose but I remember one of the wrong choices
there was a word like “celebratory(?)”
if anybody remember this we should add it to the list

we should try to make a complete list just like those people in the SAT American thread did

-Quoted a line about “my mother probably felt bad…” –> emotional response

That’s the question asking why the author assumed the mother felt bad right? And the answer is … either “emotional response” or “points to mother’s effort to help”? Kipling, can you remember other words in the “emotional response” choice??

I think for the SC question you’re talking about I picked the one with ___, ironic. Is that one of the choices?

For the squid passage, did the question asked about the purpose of the 1st passage or the 2nd passage? My memory’s getting hazy now … :(

And yeah, I’m trying to compile a list of answers. We don’t have much from the writing section though … please post if you remember something. I think the one question we argued about was the Tom Cruise braces thing, which sentence should be omitted.
