It was using “faith and religion” [something related o religion] to combat social problems

Why did Great Britain pass the Sugar Act - customs duties
Is “custom duties” the same answer as strengthening enforcement of previous laws or something like that?

DEBATABLE small passage about Britain - "They levied taxes simply to raise revenue
I’m fairly certain the answer to the question related to taxation without representation. The text specifically (in italics) referenced the colonists as only “objects” of what parliament was doing. The colonists wouldn’t protest Great Britain trying to raise revenue. They protested that revenue coming in the forms of taxes that they never consented to.

Thanks for your memory. Now the scale is tipped to the taxation w/o representation answer. Wouldn’t hurt to have more light shined on the actual passage, however.

im pretty sure the passage given on taxes was from “Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania,” which argued that taxes used for raising revenue was unconstitutional.

Letters is the most significant writing made in opposition to townshend duties, which the question stated was about, and teh SAT usually uses famous writings from teh period.

But the Constitution wasn’t even created during that time, lol.

I’m kidding, I know what you mean though, the tone of unconstitutionality was definitely in the passage. I’m just not sure why some people in this thread are so quick to completely disregard it.

no, dickinson came before constitution
clarifying this was written to protest townshend acts, wiki just wrote that he challenged “constitutionality” of the taxes

hmm i was wondering about what that word “objects” was italicized for in the taxation passage, that does imply no representation, i hope its that one. im pretty sure it was taken from the period of time around 1763-1774

10 wrong with 1 skipped… any chance of an 800? (maybe with an especially nice curve?)

Most likely - this was a pretty hardcore test after all. For most of us, anyway.

was this the tax passage?

“Here we may observe an authority expressly claimed and exerted to impose duties on these colonies; not for the regulation of trade; not for the preservation or promotion of a mutually beneficial intercourse between the several constituent parts of the empire, heretofore the sole objects of parliamentary institutions; but for the single purpose of levying money upon us.”

if it is, then answer is definitely arguing against levying taxes for revenue
as stated before, this is from letters from a farmer in pennsylvania, which stated britain can represent colonies, but it can not tax for revenue

*dickinson basically said britain can tax colonies in order to maintain empire, but can not tax just cuz they need money

I don’t remember there being any pictures of an Asian man nor do I remember there being one about the Berlin Airlift…However, there was one about the Berlin Wall, specifically and I remember one of the answers (my answer) had to do with the Soviet union not providing free elections in Eastern Europe or something like that.

The asian man over a map was containment?

i wish i could get an actual picture of it, haha.

it was like a vietnamese guy with a knife that said Democracy on it, and he was dressed like rambo style right?

and yes it was containment. it said something along the lines of “everybody has to do their part” or something like that i think…

the picture also said “stop communism” lol

If the background information behind the author of the passage is indeed true, then that completely settles the question: its levying taxes. Oh well. D:

And the asian man issue - I know what you guys are talking about, but in no way did I think ASIAN MAN when I saw that photo… Lmao, was it because of his sword? I don’t know what features of his made him asian, maybe ya’ll just racist, haha. I just thought he was some random 3rd country guy.

Anywho, that “asian guy” was containment, definitely.

Thanks for describing the pic, it was bothering me as well Now I completely remember it.

I still but it definitely one I didn’t skip and if clearly said “stop communism” then i can only assume that i put the right answer, haha.

Well I am asian, so technically, I can profile the person. And was levying taxes one of the choices? I don’t remember seeing that.

I’m asian as well and I saw nothing asian about him. He looked more like a pirate than anything. Or maybe I just didnt pay enough attention because I was moving through the test at a torrid pace.
