June Advising Days

My son was accepted ED to Muhlenberg. :) I was wondering what takes place on June advising days. Also, is there another day in April when accepted sudents attend? I read something about "accepted students day". It that part of orientation as well?

Congratulations... I hope your son enjoys it as much as my daughter has. From what I remember, on those advising days, your child takes a placement test... I think either foreign language placement, or math. On more thought, I suspect they do the math placement on-line before the June advising days, then do the foreign language placement while there.

The kids then get the results of their foreign language placement, and the advisor assigned to them will have their math placement test results. With those two test scores, they attend a pre-scheduled appt. with their advisor and pick classes for their first semester freshman year. One of the first events is a plenary session introduced by the school president, Randy Helm. Anytime you get a chance to hear him speak, I'd take advantage of it. He is so completely entertaining and in-tune with what the students and parents are thinking, it's uncanny. When you hear him speak, you will never second guess your child's choice to attend Muhlenberg. There is also a reception held at the end of advising day at President Helm's house; there was some sort of signing involved in that, too... a signing by the student (convocation of sorts), and some nice refreshments.

It was quite an eventful experience for us... three days before daughter's advising day, we had attended my nephew's funeral, who had been killed in a car crash in Texas (we are from the Chicago area). On our way back from Allentown to the Philly airport to catch our return flight home, we were rear-ended by a semi-truck on the interstate. Then our flight was canceled, we were given seats on another flight, which subsequently returned to the terminal when a couple of passengers became unruly (they were plastered). By the time that was resolved, it was too late for our plane to leave Philly - we would not have made it back to Midway before it closed for the night (storms in the area would have required the plane to take a longer route to avoid the storms). We almost didn't get a hotel room (finally found one when my husband, back home in Chicago, called Expedia and they found us one). Let's just say in hindsight, calling it a hotel room is an overstatement. I left my cell phone in the taxi cab that we had waited in line for almost an hour to get, so by the time he was able to return it to us, it was 2:45AM. And I still have not been released from my chiropractor's care to settle the case eight months later (although I'm hoping that will happen soon).

Needless to say, I was afraid that daughter was going to see the whole event as an omen of her impending attendance at Muhlenberg, but she's as happy as a clam there, and has been since day 1.

Just remembered... if your child wants to join any choirs at school, they will also audition for that during their advising day.

Since we live so far away, we did not attend accepted students day. She was also in the middle of rehearsals for a musical. We had visited the previous fall when she auditioned for her talent scholarship.

I remember the advising day as being very rushed. We had to select a meal plan as well. It would help to look at the meal plan options before arriving on campus. Be sure to have a very good idea of class choices for registration as well as some back ups in case some classes are full. Also keep in mind, choir rehearsals are 4:30-6:00PM Tues/Thurs. When my D found out in July that she made it into the chior she had scheduling conflits to deal with in August.

Accepted students Day In April

I don't remember as much about this day as we had attended several colleges the same week. I believe the student clubs had booths set up in the gym where you could stop by and ask questions. In another gym they had booths representing all the departments with profs. on hand to answer questions... and a study abroad table. Lunch was served. Tours of the freshman residence halls were offered.

The president spoke as well as a very brillant student, who spoke about her wonderful experience at Muhlenberg. (Last ditch sales pitch!)

And there was a table where you could leave your acceptance deposit in case you decided that day you were coming!

I forgot. Photo ID's were taken as well. We lined up alot that day. (ON June advising day)

Thanks for all the information! I have also heard incredible things about President Helm. What do the parents do during June advising days? Do they stay and attend some of the activities?

They had a lecture for the parents given by a psychology prof. about letting go! Before we attended I thought this sounded a bit over the top, but it was very informative and the prof. (Bips I believe) was so engaging I advised my daughter to try and take intro to psyc with her, which she did. Bips has a book for sale in the bookstore on the subject, which I bought because I needed it!
I believe Henderson spoke. We attended a lunch with D. I don't remember what else they had for parents but they definately had things to do most of the time. Be sure to check out the choir audition times early in the day because you had to sign up for a time, if you are interested in that. I believe it is the only chance to audition until next year.

One more thing. In the summer they had gatherings for parents and students at a selection of alums houses. The parents were in one room, the kids in another. Good food and drink. I think the parents enjoyed it more than the kids. It made my D second guess her deicision as the kids weren't too talkative and lined the walls. I wouldn't bother to go to that day if you live far away.
