Junior Asking Out of Curiosity..

I'm a junior in HS at the moment and am taking the following classes: APUSH, AP Eng, French [3YR], Programming, Trigonometry [MATH B], Chemistry. (Non-APs are honors)

At my school, a lot of junior kids are taking Physics as their science class and either Statistics, AP Statistics, or Pre-Cal as their math class. This is because they took Bio freshman year, Chem sophomore year and Geometry freshman year, Trig soph year. The only reason these kids are taking either PreCal or Stat is because they'd taken Algebra 1 Regents in 8th grade while some students' middle schools did not provide that.
I took ES fresh yr, Bio soph yr and Algebra fresh yr and Geo soph yr.

I was wondering since colleges take a look at your high school transcript up to the end of your jr year if it mattered that I took Trig and Chem my jr year while other kids took Pre-Cal, Stat or Physics as long as I maintained As.

So my question is, are colleges more attracted to the kids who took Physics and Stat or Pre-Cal junior year rather than the kids who took Chem and Trig?

GENERALLY, the smart kids would take chem sophomore year and physics junior year. They’d also take precal junior year in addition to AP stat. That’s how it is where I’m from. It looks to me like the first choice would be better.

Hmmm. I think some colleges (the really high-powered ones) might care, but for the majority of schools in the United States, they wouldn’t.

So my question is… Are you shooting for a good private school and/or state school? Or are you shooting for something like the Ivy?

My school is k4-12, so it’s a bit different. But it works this way:
8th: Algebra I or Pre-Algebra
9th: Geometry or Algebra I
10th: Algebra II/Trig or Geometry OR Geometry/Algebra II/Trig
11th: Pre-Cal or Algebra II/Trig
12th: AP Cal, H Cal, or AP Stats

It’s kind of moved around a bit since I started, but that’s how it is for my grade. So kids who were in lower level math were able to double up in 10th grade to get caught up if they wanted to. I had several friends do this.

As for science, almost everyone takes Bio in 9th grade and Chem in 10th grade. Physics can be taken as a sophomore, junior, or senior. And then AP Chem is usually a junior course. AP Physics/AP Bio are usually senior courses. AP Enviro… I think they might let sophomores take this, though I honestly am not sure.

I think as long as you’re taking the highest level that you can, then you’ll be fine.

@AUGirl, I am probably going to apply to state schools, and maybe a few Ivy League schools. I was just wondering if a Junior taking Chem and Trig instead of PreCal/Stat and Physics looked bad to colleges. I might look into taking an additional separate PreCal course in the Spring at a Community College or something because that’s what looks best to do so far.

I don’t think it would really mattered. I am one of the Junior kids who took Pre Calc/AP Statistics along with AP Physics. But there are some sophomores who are also taking Pre Calc with me because they were able to get ahead (as did I).

usually the samrt people go like

9th - alg 2/trig
10th - Precalc
11th - Calc
12th - Stat/multivariable calc/ comp sci

9th - bio
10th - chem
11th - phys
12th - ap sciences

Ty all for feedback but do you think it would hurt my chances of getting into a good state uni if during my junior year, it said I took Chem and Trig?
Like I said, I took ES and Algebra 1 freshman year and Bio and Geometry sophomore year.

I would like to receive feedback from anybody reading this thread that had or have a similar situation as my current one. By that I mean, did you take Chem & Trig junior year in HS and end up going to a prestigious or nice state uni?

"usually the samrt people go like

9th - alg 2/trig
10th - Precalc

That’s actually the exact courseload I have taken for math/science. Except I took honors where available.

From what I’ve seen, most people aiming for Ivy Leagues take the best courses offered to them.

With that being said, it is a detriment to not have taken calculus by your senior year in high school, especially if you’re aiming for a Tier I school.

Here’s my math/sci course load.

9th- Biology: Did well
10th- Chem: Did pretty well
11th- AP Bio: Did very well
12th- No science

9th- Algebra: Did very well
10th- Geometry: Lolololll
11th- Alg Two and Trig: Did very well
12th- AP Stats: Doing well

Next year I’m going to Smith College, which I think is a pretty good LAC. I’m sure you can get into a very good SUNY, as long as your grades are good in your more difficult courses.

Dude -> Something tells me you went to my high school. I’m in NY too - So about the regents I know. Or it could be that NYC schools have a similar curriculum.

Well since things changed and I think they took out Math B or something, Most people did this in my (or our?) school:

Bio + Environmental Science -> Chem -> Physics -> AP Science. Either Bio, Chem, or Physics.

For math, I didn’t have this algebra thing because Math B still existed, and I passed the Math B Regents so It went smoothly:

Integrated Algebra + Math B -> Math B -> College Algebra + PreCalc -> AP Calc AB or BC or AP Stats.

If you have like an 87 average, maybe 88 or around there, and also being elligible for stuff like EOP, you can get into all SUNYs almost guaranteed. I applied to some of the best SUNYs with my grades around the 86-87 mark and got into good ones like Geneseo(which is arguably the best next to Binghamton).

What Grisam said. Basically, colleges look at rigor and will factor that into their decisions. Assuming all other stats are the same and that there are only two spots left, if Student A happened to take a more challenging courseload than Student B, colleges will be more likely to accept A over B.

Efforts- All NY schools have basically the same core course progression.

@wanton, thank you very much because your post seems to help me out a lot. As for my grades, they are on average, A-, A. I am trying to do as much as I can because this is my junior year. I’m going to definitely want to take Calc AB or Calc BC either honors or AP my senior year but I am taking Math B (Alg2/Trig) currently so I’m not too sure how I’ll be able to do that. For science, I’m planning to take AP Chem my senior year or AP Chem and Physics simultaneously.

@all, thank you. I’m looking for additional helpful posts.

9th: Earth Systems, Bio
10th: Hons Chem
11th: AP Chemistry, AP Physics C Mechanics
12th: Don’t know for science.
