Junior Visit Day, 5/18/13

Hi!
My son just got a postcard in the mail for this event. If you attended Junior Visit Day in the past, did you find it to be beneficial, even if you visited the campus in the past? Were the workshops helpful? Thanks for any insight!

My recent alum and current student both attended Junior Day when they were h.s. juniors. The current student wanted to go even though he was by then pretty familiar with the campus from visiting the then-current student. They each found it both helpful and fun (relatively speaking).

The parent workshops (added between #1’s visit and #2’s) were well run and very interesting, even to me as an alum and current parent.

My son and I attended Junior Visit Day last year. We found it very interesting and an opportunity to get to know the admissions group much better than would otherwise be possible. The day provides a different experience from Swarthmore’s typical college tours/info sessions - much more involved. But, there will be a lot of kids/parents present, so its best if you actively engage. Finally, the arboretum was spectacular in mid-May - a great chance to see how beautiful the campus is when many of the flowering trees are blooming.

Thanks! It sounds like it will be very helpful…I appreciate the responses!

DD received that same snail mail card yesterday…there are so many of these invites coming in the mail…not sure which to choose. We are headed to one on Sunday @ Barnard College. They will have the essay writing/interviewing/FA workshops etc!

I’m worried that too many of these workshops will begin to bore her. I do realize that there is value in visiting these schools/attending these all day workshops, but at what point does it become too much?

I wish I could attend this workshop! I visited and I loved it, but unfortunately we live around five hours away from Pennsylvania and that day is also the day of my prom.

I attended with my current first year student. He wasn’t planning to apply to Swarthmore at that point, but thought that the workshops would be broad enough for the weekend to help him with the admissions process in general. It did. (Though it took an additional visit in the fall of senior year to help him decide to apply.)

I was invited/want to go so much, but will be attending a graduation in Maryland. Is there anything beyond amazing that I will be missing?

Nothing to amazing IMO. It isn’t too much that you can’t find online, but it was just put together succinctly. If I remember correctly, they posted some materials online last year after the event.

EDIT: Here is one of the handouts they had,
