This question is directed to all high school (or former high school) students that have had experience in the environment of an AP classroom. I am going to be a junior next year, and I am signing up for several AP courses. At my school, only juniors and seniors can take AP classes, so I have not yet experienced any. However, I am good with time management and have balanced 12 total honors-level courses over the course of my freshman and sophomore years (6 each year). I have a cumulative average of 99, and, on top of that, I devote a lot of my time to the cross country and track & field teams at my school. I have had no academic problems thus far. Such a fact leads to my question... Can four AP classes be balanced with sports and other extracurricular activities? In other words, will I be ripping my hair out every night for the entire school year? My planned schedule for next year is...

Core Classes:
AP Eng Lang
AP Calc AB
Honors Spanish 4
AP US History
AP Chem

Electives:
20th Century Film
20th Century Music
Intro to Piano
SAT Prep
Phys Ed (Fall Sem)
Phys Ed (Spring Sem)

I attempted to compensate for my schedule's rigorous core by selecting easier electives (so that I am not completely stressed out). Does anyone think that this schedule will be too much to handle? Is this a good schedule for success? As a senior, I plan to continue on a track of multiple AP classes. Please keep in mind that I am hoping to apply to Ivy League universities and top-level colleges. Thanks for any feedback!

Four? You’ll be fine. You should take physics at some point in high school, if you haven’t already.

Thanks! I am in Honors Physics now, and I might self-study AP Physics in my senior year. Thanks once again!

I am a junior right now with AP Calc, AP Bio, APUSH, and AP Lit. I play sports and am involved in many ECs, at times it can be a little rough. I think I would be much better off if I took 3, but that’s just me. If you often feel burnt out when you get home from practice/ec activities you may want to take three, but if you can set time out each day you should be fine.

I’m probably speak a little too much from personal experience 8-|

But then again you’re trying to go Ivy so you need to keep your course rigour up. Disregard everything I said, lol.

Trust me, thousands of kids are taking and have taken even more than 4 ap classes. If they survived, you should be fine!

I’m a junior with 4 AP’s and 1 post-AP. I play 3 varsity sports and do drama, music, and some other EC’s. It will be fine.

Thanks everyone! I am going to shoot for 4 APs then!

Welcome to the club (: upcoming Junior too, taking Biology, English Language, Spanish Language, & United States History.

Make sure to put a lot of time into it! Junior year is crucial, you want it to be challenging, but you must make sure you can get excellent grades with it.

APUSH and LIT are a piece of cake ****

While on this topic would 5 APs be too many for an average A student? (As in not a CC kid). I know I am taking AP Cal AB or BC (undecided), AP Physics, AP World and APUSH. Could I handle one more?

Hello all,

I’m a junior this year, and I took:
AP English Literature and Composition
AP Environmental Science
AP Chemistry
AP United States History
AP Calculus AB

I am in Extracurriculars that keep me out until 8:30 at night Monday-Thursday, and until 5 or 6 on Fridays.

It is doable, but it’s going to suck. There have been many nights where I just want to roll over and cry because I feel so overwhelmed.
