So, sophomore years ending and I pretty much screwed it up. Got about 7 Bs total and majorly slacked off. Is it too late to turn it around starting Junior Year, or have I screwed it up with sophomore year?

Really would love to go to Brown or Dartmouth, do I still have a chance?

You would have to work your tail off. B’s aren’t bad, just not great. Colleges look mostly at junior and senior year then sophomore year. But you really need to work SUPER hard, study and keep your head in the books.

To get into brown it would certainly be a huge stretch… You would have had to had a very good (and legitimate) reason for not doing better, rather than just slacking off. Bs aren’t bad grades, and if you do well junior year getting into good schools shouldn’t be a problem. Brown, however, is a reach school even for people with perfect grades and SATs/ACTs. Brown is very picky with who they admit.

Freshman and sophomore year, I got some As, a slew of Bs, and a couple Cs. Junior and senior years, I did the hardest courses possible and had a 3.97 GPA, bringing my total 4-year GPA to around 3.65, keeping strong with activities, doing well on the SAT, and working hard on my essays. I’ll be heading to Notre Dame this fall (my story/advice: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/admissions-hindsight-lessons-learned/1099647-billymc-s-advice-future-applicants.html), so I was able to turn things around.

I think you have a shot if you make a sharp change and make it clear in your application (I put a paragraph in “Additional Information”) that you matured, take responsibility for your performance (though Bs aren’t bad, I put that because I had two Cs), and are dedicated to academic success, as shown by your most recent grades.

@Jazzii - Yeah, I definitely intend to. I really regret not doing that from the start.

@rubberducky - I totally understand, Brown’s just the tip top highest school I want to go to, there are ton of other schools that I’d love to go to that aren’t as selective.

@Billy - Wow, congratulations! That’s fantastic!. I took a look at your thread, it’s incredibly helpful, thanks so much for writing it.
