just curious...

why do colleges like to ask on their supplemental forms "which other colleges have you applied to"? Do they have a way to check this? Cos' obviously some students may not like to let rival colleges know that he/she is applying to both right?

Just curious, cos' a friend who's applying to colleges this year asked me this recently. got nothing to do with me, since I'm happily settled in Wellesley (glad that Williams didn't take me in from their waitlist!!)~ :D

The colleges say that they themselves don't care but use it for statistical purposes. College Guidbooks usually include information like "students who applied to this school also applied to..."

but do colleges actually have a way to check which other colleges the student applied to?

Yeah, do they?

I have a friend who got waitlisted at Harvard and rejected from Columbia (she's really happy at Barnard now) and there was always the possibility that she got rejected from Columbia because they thought Harvard would take her and they didn't want to waste a spot on her...

I'm still a junior, so I don't have to list other schools yet, but I'd like to know...

any more ideas people?

My D's GC says to leave it blank for the reasons stated by PurpoisePal. However, all the schools you apply to are on the CSS Profile - the financial aid form required by most highly selective private schools. But the admissions and finaid apps are separate decisions.

what if she's filling in the International Student Financial Aid Form? She's from China by the way. Will Colleges know which other colleges she's also applying to?
