Also applying to:

Northwestern, JHU, Penn, Duke, Cornell, Rice, UMich, Georgetown, Washington University at St. Louis, University of Chicago, Emory, UC LA, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Cooper Union

You have a decent shot as any. Your SAT is a little low, even for an engineer (who are given leeway in R and W scores).

A lot also depends on the rigor of your schedule.

You only show you have taken two AP’s. If your school only offers maybe 4 AP’s I’d say this is alright, but if your school offers 10+ AP’s (like most I know do) only having taken two AP’s isn’t going to cut it.

Also, your extracurriculars do not show any leadership or passion.

The first generation will help you, the Asian male will disadvantage you.

Asian male…ahhh…if you were a urm, I would give you decent shot, but there are so many much more qualified asians that you probably won’t stand too great of a chance. The engineering program at cornell is one of the best among ivies…no offense, your ECs, SATs, class rank/gpa arent especially impressive. I really hope you wrote a mind-blowing essay and have great teacher and counselor recs.

When you say Penn, do you mean Penn state or UPenn? If you mean UPenn, your chance is even slimmer. If you mean Penn state, then you have a decent shot.

As for UC Berkeley, even if you are applying from Cal, you still have a hard time making the cut because UC are very number based (SAT I, II, class rank and gpa-all of those you somewhat lack) , and competitive UCs (Berkeley, LA) pretty much only accept ELC students (students who are ranked in the top 4% of their school).

I would retake those SATs. There’s still the January ones. your SATIIs are great though. I’m not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic. if you get your CR and W scores up (700+), you’d stand a much better chance. Good luck :)

I’ve taken the sat three times already…is it going to hurt to take it a fourth time? Will it make me look desperate??

it does look weird to have taken the SATs over 3 times. apply to more safety schools (i assume you did, but just didn’t list them?)

ur essays man…ur essays is where it’s at

Don’t take the SAT one more time… that’s just BAD.
Um, yeah, like chendrix has said, your SAT is a little low, and so are your SAT IIs… but your GPA seems pretty strong.
You seem to lack a little in terms of leadership as well, but considering how you are applying to the engineering school, I suppose that’s okay.
Overall, I would say you have a decent chance, and that A LOT of it depends on your essays.

Thanks everyone. Everyone one else with some different opinions?

Can I read ur essay…i cant use them obviously as the deadline has passed…

I hope you applied to some safeties.

you really need to apply to some safety school…seriously!

I agree with the above posters, but I do have a quick note to add.
A student with worse (by a significant amount) stats than mine got in ED at Engineering. It all depends on what the adcoms think, though your stats aren’t top-notch, being a first-generation college student MIGHT push you over the edge at Engineering. Then again, Engineering is more about numbers, so I would say don’t bank on it.
Now if you were applying to CAS for a Spanish major as a first-generation Asian male, you’d have a MUCH better chance.

The ED results just show that SAT scores + GPA is not the only key to get into Cornell. Make sure your essays are flawless and your reccommendations perfect.

Okay, so you guys think that maybe I got a shot? By the way I wrote a very passionate essay.

better be passionate ;-D

So I’m guessing essays are very important if not more important than sat scores?

yah. SAT scores don’t mean too much these days. People need to realize that now. There’s so many people applying and although an SAT cutoff would make things easier, that’s not how colleges do it now. They look at everything especially the essays. Essays actually show whether your unique and passionate about what you want to study. Good Grades, GPA, EC’s…bla…EVERY FRIGGEN STUDENT HAS THEM!!! ZOMG. I hate when people list that. It doesn’t mean much. Yes, of course good grades matter. But why do people go on a limb and do so many EC’s. Colleges don’t give a flying whoop about this and that. It’s about the quality. QUALITY. Sadly, majority of the students do not understand. Btw, I’m not saying you are.

IMO, I think essays are the biggest factor coming in app’s. Yea…you may have a better chance with couple extra SAT points, retaking an exam to get +100-300. Though, your chances won’t increase dramatically.

it depends on the school, period.

^ I agree 100%. Cornell, specifically, does not emphasize grades or SATs NEARLY as much as some other top schools. At Cornell, fit/essays are the only way to go. Academics/test scores that may cut it at Cornell if you have the right passion and the right fit, may NOT cut it at other elites: for instance, if you apply to Dartmouth with a 1980 there’s a low chance of admission, but if you apply to Cornell’s atmospheric science program with loads of meteorology/earth sci related ECs and essays that convey your passion for atmospheric science with a 1980 SAT, chances are that you’ll get in.

Engineering tends to be the most number-based of Cornell’s colleges, though obviously not exclusively so.

I’m rooting for you (and myself).
:)

Well, pretty much everyone has already covered it, but I’ll add some extra assurance. You seem to have as good of a shot as anyone else, but having some good essays will greatly help your chances, seeing as how Cornell likes to put emphasis on those and “fit.”

Anyways, my half-@ssed conclusion is that your SAT isn’t the most spectacular thing, taking it again is NOT a good idea, and being Asian doesn’t help you much here. (No offense)
