I wouldn't expect admission to GT, let alone aid. Are you deferred? UM admit with no aid is really a no, period. Top privates for engineering are just not likely with your stats also. You have a good cheap option, so phew!
Just got my financial aid package back. Depressed and disappointed. Need help understanding if true.
“I wouldn’t expect admission to GT”
Gee, thanks.
A cursory Google search appears to show that it has a sub-30% acceptance rate. Nobody should “expect” to get into a school that selective. That’s just realistic, not an insult to you.
@bodangles I’m not “expecting” to get in. It’s a hypothetical situation. IF I were to get in I was simply asking if I would get similar aid.
GT doesn’t need to buy OOS kids. Georgia has its own poor students to educate.
If you’re not expecting to get in, then you shouldn’t take it as an insult when someone says “I wouldn’t expect to get in”…right?
@bodangles
Quite frankly I don’t have the time to dedicate to this, nor was this the point of my post. I came here to talk about UM financial aid. That’s all.
I spent hours, days, and months on my applications. I DONT expect to automatically get in. But I do have a chance. And yes it is a bit insulting when someone straight up indicates that someone doesn’t have a chance purely on stats.
There is a whole lot more to the admissions process.
There. End of discussion. I apologize if I offended someone for some reason.
You came here looking for support for your feeling of entitlement. You did not receive it. The posters here are all adults who have been through this with our sons and daughters.
UofM OOS tuition is high for a State School. It is the equivalent of a private university.
If they gave you no aid (other than loans and work-study) then your parents would have to take out $50,000+ in loans annually for you to attend on top of the loans you would have to take out. This means a quarter of a million dollars in debt at the end of four years. I don’t think this is a good course of action. I understand your disappointment but I would focus on your in state options.
Trust me that you can get an excellent education and have a wonderful experience without taking on that kind of debt.
@MommyCoqui I understand. Thanks
@TomSrOfBoston Say what you will. I don’t feel entitled to anything. Sorry if it came off like that. Not my intention
@Monkey288195 This week one of my twins had similar results OOS with UMD. He’s disappointed but okay now and has two very good instate options with scholarship offers too. Financial aid hasn’t come out yet. Our instate costs are similar to MI, I envy FL, some of the lowest instate costs in the country! My kids didn’t apply to any small LACs which may offer more financial aid. I agree with many posts here, state schools offer residents, don’t go into it debt.
I understand the frustration of OP as he did tried the NPCs and thought it was affordable before applying. There are just situations that the CSS profile may drive a very different outcome than FAFSA EFC and NPC. It is not the fault of the student, nor the school. I hope OP would have an affordable alternative.
This Cane says “Go Gators!”. You have an excellent affordable option in UF. It could be so much worse.
As others have noted, this seems to be a case where the NPC is not a good predictor of your situation- this would likely be true for all schools you applied to. Unfortunately UM is one of the most expensive state schools in the country. Although they may offer more OOS FA than most state schools for many students, their bottom line will still be very high for OOS students. To put in context, I ran NPC for 13 schools for my daughter (1 IS flagship, 2 OOS public and 10 private), 10 of which she applied. The most expensive school BY FAR was UMichigan (and the actual aid package being 10% better than NPC won’t change this). The next most expensive school was Georgia Tech. Most of the privates show well over 2x FA vs UM and 1 actually shows over 3x actual UM offer. Many of these privates are known for their large institutional endowments but have very low admit rates. In other words, if you are looking for a lot of FA, OOS publics are the worst option. They just don’t have the money.period.
How can you expect aid when you don’t live in Michigan? If your parents pay $0 in taxes to Michigan how can you expect any aid more than $0? How would Michigan residents who pay taxes to Michigan feel if their money goes to people from other states?
Maybe he expected aid because it is advertised that they meet the need for OOS people with less than $90,000 income. I am wondering who is getting that aid if someone with his numbers did not? Isn’t it true that they are offering grants to OOS students with incomes that low?
I am out of state as well and when I checked my aid it was zero as well, but it turns out they needed a tax form and something else and then my aid updated. Make sure you click the documents tab and see if any forms say “requested”. Based on your situation, I would assume you would get some aid. Also, call the financial aid office because they can tell you if they are missing a crucial form
@gradclass2022 Yeah that’s why I am calling Monday to confirm. If you don’t mind me asking, what was the amount of aid you got?
My income level was >120k and I got 14k not including loans, I believe the aid with loans was 20 something
