Financial Aid

I'm OOS. Heres what my wolverine access is telling me about financial aid:
Fall-Winter
Cost of Attendance
44,991.38
Expected Family Contribution -
29,736.00

Estimated Need

15,255.38

Total Aid

0.00

Now is this official or what? I mean I heard Michigan was stingy on OOS aid...but this stingy. Both my parents are teachers, so it's not like we blow our noses in benjamins. Is this typical or are they going to give me money its just not come through yet?

Did they email you saying that this is your estimated package. Or are you just gathering this from wa? I believe it's all a work in progress until they email you an award notice, but not sure as we have not gotten one yet either.
Good luck,
K

I got my financial aid today. Already had a 10k scholarship, and then I got 5500 a year in loans. No grants. Go figure. I'm not going to go 120k in debt... It's ridiculous. I figured they'd be a little nicer but no.

So wait listers be prepared to snap up spots, it seems like a lot of people will be disappointed in financial aid if this is the pattern. Haha.

Yeah I didn't apply for any aid, but if I don't get some sort of scholarship I don't think I'd want my parents shelling 50,000$ a year for Umich. (my parents are willing to, but I refused their offer).

So I'm waiting to see if Umich offers anything, if they don't I probably won't go.

My EFC was 25000, and I'm in-state. My award from UMich themselves was $5500 in unsubsidized loans and a $1500 Regents' scholarship. I'm pleased, and outside scholarships will without a doubt help.

UMich definitely came through. While we have a gap (OOS) it is not nearly what I anticipated.

Okay, I take it back. I think awards are works in progress - everything that was there earlier today is now gone (except for the scholarship). I'm just going to shut up until the "official" notification comes through.

I got an email today. I cant tell if this is all that im getting. Or just all that ive gotten so far. Im hoping for the later. But i got 5500 in federal loans. Please oh please tell me theyll keep emailing me as they give me more $!

Say you were to bring outside scholarships in. Would they reduce your loans first or your grants?

Grants are reduced first.

I'm so down. I love U of M, but with an EFC of 3k, I/we need to take out $20k in loans a year! That is not what I expected.

I also got an email with just 5500 federal loan. Over four years, the gap is at least $100k for me (out of state), and I really doubt I can come up with that in scholarships :-/ That is a ton of debt at that age...

Exact same award (OOS also) as compactrunner. I'm looking at $100K debt also. Too bad. I love Michigan. Georgia Tech lower tuition/better package, or UNC (in-state) or NC State (in-state) looking like better options.

same here.... I was expecting more from UM....

What baffles me a bit is that I read on their website that only 8 % of their budget was public funding. This has to be far below the norm for most public universities, so I figured there'd be more opportunity for financial aid.

Also, I've been floating around the finaid website looking for scholarships I can apply for, and there are a lot of merit based scholarships you are considered for just from your original application that don't notify until mid april, so there is still hope for some scholarships I guess. I'm just a little nervous about waiting until say, April 20 to have all my finaid options in, and left with just over a week to make the final decision.

huh. for me, with a 0 efc, I recevied 35k in aid + grant and 5k loan. So I'll be taking about 10K a year. I'm OOS; I am extremely surprised about this generous financial aid from a state school

do the financial aid / scholarship package come in an email or by snail mail? I just got my acceptance yesterday, and I thought they calculated that before they sent you the acceptance email, but whoops guess not :P

it will be on Wolverine Access. I was accepted a few months ago.

I was surprised that scholarships were included in the FA package. Is this typical of state schools?

lol is 5500 a magic number or something? According to FAFSA I need 10K but they've given me 5500 in loans, no grants. Sucks...
