Just how competitive is ND?

I'm not ripping you jvon, just clarifying for the sake of people who might be reading these postings to get a good idea of when is the best time to apply. It's frequently been stated on these boards that people who apply EA and get deferred end up disadvantaged a bit in the RD pool, despite revised statistics, as most people have by the time RD decisions are made. I don't think it should make a difference how you got there, either, but I tend to think it did--seems to me you should have been accepted cleanly out of RD with the stats you had...

Yes, you are already in, and that is all that matters. For the sake of those applying in the future, though, it might help to clarify, lest they think that (a) you were deferred EA with a 33 and/or (b) you were waitlisted RD with a 33 without having previously applied and been deferred. It might help someone else make a more informed decision...

i'm not disagreeing with you i'm just wondering why that would make a difference (i didn't know that stats showed it did). I guess no one can get into the heads of those people

I read this and wonder how DD got in then...she is of course amazing in my totally unbiased view, but no legacy...#2 or #3 -we could never get a straight answer from the school, but near the top of a class of 300. Her SAT's were 1430/2140 and all her APs from junior year were 4 or 5 so her academics were strong but I see kids on this board with her stats who don't make it, and yet she got in EA last fall. I know she got a big boost from her teacher recommendation but I have no idea what the guy said about her. She got flatly rejected by Stanford and MIT, with the same package of scores, essays and recommendations (she recycled her Stanford essay for ND which I thought was a mistake, but in a weird way it might have helped her because it was about a significant photograph so very personal and not the typical community service or Rudy essay that they dread at ND).

Bottom line, I can't make head or tail of it other than faith that the ND people know what they are doing and if you are right for ND they can smell it and you should just trust them to do their jobs..DD applied having never visited or even having met any alums, she got in and when she visited she had the feeling of "being home" and never even considered her other schools.

Jvon--I've never seen the stats on that issue (risks of applying EA vs. RD), but I've heard it discussed. Irish was one to bring it up a lot. Bottom line that really matters, though, is you got in, and you're headed up to ND in one day! :)

Mombot, I'm convinced that intangibles play a huge role in ND admissions. It's the nature of the boards to zone in on scores, because they are easier to compare and pretty clear-cut to express. I honestly believe that character matters more than many might think it would... It goes back to the "being home" and the "fit" you talk about. It is an amazing place, and they want amazing people. They tend to get them, too...

Good luck to your daughter, and to you in saying goodbye. Mine is doing her final packing today--I'm gonna miss that girl!

true that!!! can't wait! although i just visited my friends at IU with a huge quad dorm, a/c, and sweet frat rushing :(

i'll get over it--i think ND might be a *little * bit better overall despite the dorms and lack of fraternities :)

despite? Don't you mean "because of"?

Mombot, your daughter experienced that same phenomenon that so many kids do when the visit ND.

That feeling of "being home" is the first thing I thought of when I stepped on the ND campus. I dont want to go far from my home, and that is why I eliminated many midwest and east coast schools. But, when I visited ND, I just had no feeling of being away. I dont know... its hard to understand or explain....... I just feel so comfortable there, even though its a 5 hour plane ride and a totally TOTALLY different climate. Its a weird phenomenon.. but Im not the only one who experiences it.

JVON, IU is a sweet school..... but I think you'll get over it pretty quick!!

Did you happen to go into their intramural facility? How awesome is that?!

Tim--I figured it out because there is something about ND compared to other schools. Walking around campus there is this lack of pretension that is so different from other colleges..the girls don't even really wear makeup, let alone carry the designer (or knockoff) bags that you see on other campuses. It was like they plucked every unassuming smart kid off of every Catholic HS campus in America and dropped them in one spot.

Funny story about that though..I was telling DD this..."I didn't even SEE any suntanned blondes..." her response was "oh yeah, they are all over at St. Mary's."

TRUST ME i'm not at all saying i'd rather be at IU (haha)... I was just joking around... ALL my best friends from high school went there and it was weird having to leave them all yesterday...

well i'm leaving to move in!! next post will be in my dorm! :) :) :)

They're all on the lacrosse team! Seriously, at a ND lax camp last summer, I thought we had stumbled into a Ford Modeling Agency casting session.
