Just remember not to register for more than 16 hours unless you're on scholarship

Casino, UA lowered the maximum credit limit without an extra charge to 16 (from 17) in Fall 2009. As the scholarships I and many others received were accepted when the limit was 17 credits, we were able to take 17 credits without an additional tuition charge.

IIRC, the credit limit for those with scholarships was raised to 20 starting in Fall 2010.

The per credit limit charge for OOS students is high because Alabama law sets a minimum rate for OOS tuition charges, 250% of the in-state rate IIRC. This is part of the reason why scholarships are for “the value [or a proportion] of tuition” rather than “tuition or a portion thereof.” It has a side benefit of allowing students to use private scholarships that can only be used towards tuition as the UA scholarships can be applied to other costs.

I’ve looked through all the Scholarship paperwork my son received and I don’t see anything about the maximum credit hours. He has the UA Scholarship plus the Engineering Scholarship which covers the rest of the tuition - what would be the maximum hours covered with his scholarship? - Thanks!

Which UA scholarship does he have? The Presidential? UA Scholar?

Does he have full tuition either thru the Presidential or the UA Scholar plus Eng’g? If so, then his scholarships will cover up to 20 credits per semester.

Edited to add…

Just saw an older post…your son has the UA Scholar plus eng’g supplement…so he’s fine. He’s good for 20 credits per semester.

Thanks M2CK! Roll Tide!
