10 APs, mostly 4-5s on the AP tests. I play an instrument (not the best), am part of the NHS, and am part of 2-3 clubs.

What kind of colleges should I be looking at?? I know some of the better Ivy Leagues are, well, out of my league (no pun intended). How about Columbia, Northwestern, Princeton, UPenn, UChicago, UCLA, or John Hopkins??

Could you elaborate on your ECs/awards and test scores? Also, you stated that the Ivies are “out of your league” but then go you on to list 3 that you’re wanting chances for? Anyways, Columbia, Princeton, UPenn, and UChicago are reaches for everyone. The other 3 are matches to reaches depending on your other stats.

APs:
Psych - 5
Govt - 5
Eng Lang - 4/5 (just took the test!)
Macro - 4/5 (taking test tomorrow)
US History - 4/5 (took test today)
Stats - 4/5 (will take test)
Physics B - 3/4 (just took test!)
Eng Lit - 3/4/5 (taking it next yr)
Calc BC - 5 (taking it next yr, but pretty confident)
Chem - 3/4/5 (taking it next yr)

got a 34 composite on ACT

best violinist in school, part of a local orchestra as well but average

part of Literary Magazine, Scholastic Bowl, Chamber Orchestra (considered a “club” since it’s not a class), World Youth Science/Engineering Team, went to state level for science fair freshman year, also on jv swim team freshman year, part of NHS, volunteer at local hospital

@marilo12 how could you make that assessment without GPA? OP, what’s you GPA and rank? Also, only 2 of the APs were actual scores. Psychology and govt. The rest were projections.

I’m sorry, but no one can really do a well thought out chance me when you are confident you will get a 5 on the AP Calc BC exam without even taking the course. It’s hard to take you seriously that way.

@kiaralnNYC. It’s not such an unreasonable estimate, OP could very well have talked to her =friends and perhaps looked at some of the material or statistics. The fact that 50% of people who take the exam get a 5 should certainly make one confident of their chances. UCLA and Northwestern are matches, the rest are more like low reaches. IMO, there aren’t enough leadership positions. And what is your ethnicity OP?

It is actually funny to see someone who attempt to apply NU with 1700 in SAT to make this comment, but she is right this time.
If you go to Parchment and punch in your data, you would see the chance for NU with ACT 34 with GPA 4.0 and the highest course rigor to be less than 50%. And that estimation was based on previous stat that the admission rate was much higher. In other words, the current chance would be even lower.

I would say NU is a reach, just like the rest of the schools minus UCLA.

Anyways, a lot of the schools you listed are pretty different. Some of those schools are relatively small (eg: Princeton), while others are massive (UCLA). Look into whether or not size matters to you, initially it didn’t play into my college decision at all, but after a while, it made me quite reluctant to choose the college I’m going to attend. At UCLA, for example, you’re going to have massive lower division classes (I don’t know much about the school but I’m inclined to say that some may be 400+ students) and maybe even some upper divs. This makes interaction with professors and access to research opportunities slightly more difficult (you’ll have to work harder to find them), so consider that when you’re looking at schools.

Also consider differences in the social scene, if that’s important to you. You won’t find much from what I hear at UChicago, and certainly not much at all at JHU.

Also judging by your screen name, IF you’re premed, look at schools that have little grade deflation so you don’t have a hard time getting into med school. I think (I’m not certain) UChicago is a school with lots of grade deflation so maybe you may want to consider that.

Just to clarify: I’m pretty sure I’ll get a 5 on ap calc bc my mom is a math teacher. Also, my GPA is 5.97 and I am Indian.

I’ll have to look into Parchment, I didn’t know what it was.

I’m still looking at the academics of the schools, haven’t yet began to look at size or social scene yet. That being said, I am pretty flexible with the size.

@billcsho I am applying to NU because my parents want me to go. I got a 1700 cold on the exam and I enrolled in a prep immediately after I got my score back. I’m not proud and I am working to improve. I never said NU was a match for me. I know it is a high reach and I’m aware of what it takes to get in, so I’m fully qualified to discuss this OP’s concerns.
