Kelley LLC Notification

An interesting note about our day at Kelley this spring that surprised me…they made a point of saying that the GPA for standard admits was higher than direct admits throughout the college experience. That may be why the split in the KLLC is 50/50. Thank you to the current students for all of your insights…and good luck to all of the incoming freshman!

@scrabblemomb, that makes sense considering every standard admit had high enough grades freshman year to get admitted to Kelley. I wonder what it would look like if you compared the GPA of DAs to all freshman attempting to gain admission to Kelley during their freshman year.

@hkem123 I didn’t capture that statistic…but it would be interesting to know! I wonder if that is published anywhere?

I doubt it. It would be tough to track since not all students formalize their future intent to apply to Kelley by officially becoming pre-business.

Im an international student and haven’t received any notification yet. Good luck guys!

Hkem123

Why would the KLLC need to reflect a different demographic from Kelley? If thats true then we have a problem.

BTW, 8 out of the 9 kids I met touring the KLLC on DA day were from Indiana so I guess I missed all the OOS kids.

I’ll be calling IU tomorrow to see if i can get an official comment. Probably futile i know but for 20k more a year to be OOS I think we’re entitled to some clarity.

Just to give a quick update: I got accepted into the KLLC. I’m not a direct admit but hope to see all of you guys this fall!

Hi salami809. First congrats! But just a quick question for you. How did you receive your notification? Snail mail or email?(I’m also an international student))

@chwu60‌ Thanks mate! I just contacted the KLLC office and they told me that the acceptance letter was sent to a Post Office adress I have in Florida, but I didn’t received anything so they sent me the letter via email. My advice would be to just email the KLLC office and tell them your situation.

Reply sent to my sons email today

My son was not accepted to the Kelley LLC, he’s an entering freshman from Florida this fall. He is clear about his business major. Have you ever heard of anyone trying to peition for acceptance follwing deniall to the LLC?

To all who were not accepted to KLLC:

This fall, I will be a sophomore at IU. I was a DA to Kelley and lived in the KLLC this past year. And, while there were perks, any pre-business or DA student could reap very similar benefits with just a little effort.

What was your main motivator for applying to the KLLC? Hopefully I can show you that your goal can be achieved in many different ways…

You want to meet a lot of freshmen majoring in business so you can make like-minded friends / connections right away?
Join Kelley organizations (there are a TON) such as business fraternities, Kelley Student Government, a club related to your major interests (Investment Banking Club, Supply Chain Club, American Marketing Association, Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, the list goes on). OR, take the class for direct-admit freshmen (How Business Works) or, if not direct admit, the standard Intro to Business class (not sure of class title, but I’m sure there will be plenty of freshmen.) If you live in the Northwest neighborhood, KLLC or not, you’re also bound to run into tons of DA or pre-business freshmen. It’s the most popular neighborhood for business freshmen. You’re also going to meet a ton of business students in your business classes anyway (which you take a lot of your freshmen year… C104, A100, K201, etc. etc.)

You want to reap the benefits of professional development?
Kelley organizations and the school itself hosts SO many different speakers, networking events, and professional development programming. It’s all around you. Sure, the KLLC requires you to take part in professional development programs, but if you simply look up around Hodge Hall (business school building) every once in a while, you’re bound to see advertisements on the electronic announcement screens about all sorts of these opportunities.

You like the idea of having a faculty floor mentor?
Go to your favorite professor’s office hours every few weeks and just talk and build a connection that way. My floor mentor maybe did 2 events with our floor, if that, to be honest. Maybe some other floors were different, but honestly, you can build a relationship with a professor in so many different ways and I didn’t even find this part that helpful.

You wanted the chance for “leadership opportunities” in an organization early-on?
The thing about the KLLC leadership is that it ends after freshman year. Personally, I think it’s wise to get involved with an organization your freshman year that you can be a part of for more than just one year. Not hating on the KLLC leadership team by any means (and if you are reading this, got in, and are interested, I would say go for it!), but there are leadership opportunities all around you even as a freshmen. Certain Kelley organizations WILL have opportunities for freshmen leadership roles. Organizations outside of Kelley also offer these opportunities. There is residence hall government / floor government in every res. hall outside of the KLLC too. If this is important to you, it’s there.

To be quite honest, the biggest benefit of the KLLC for me was having a few classes in my residence hall building, being close to Kelley, and meeting kids who are also majoring in something business related. For the first two, you still may end up in the northwest neighborhood, so that’s the same benefit right there. And if you aren’t in northwest you will have the pleasure of walking through IU’s beautiful campus each day to class. I’m not trying to be sarcastic. Walking across campus exposes you to all things IU besides business, and plus, it’s beautiful. As for meeting kids interested in business, you are bound to meet some in whatever residence hall you end up and definitely in Kelley organizations.

One of my best friends at IU didn’t get into the KLLC (presumably because he is an over-represented white male from a popular midwest suburb). He is doing great academically, socially, and is very involved in Kelley and IU–more so than the majority of people who lived in the KLLC with me, I would say. The KLLC is NOT some “Kelley elite” residence hall by any means (trust me, it’s home to slackers just like any other res hall)–you are just as good as any kid who’s living there and will have incredibly similar opportunities if you have even just a little motivation to seek them out.

Hope this helps!
