Kelly School of Business vs. UMiami

I am interested in pursuing a career in business. I am deciding between Kelly at IU and UMiami. Kelly is ranked higher than UMiami's business school, but I couldn't really picture myself living in Indiana and I would dread the weather. I really value warm weather. THEY WILL BOTH COST THE SAME due to scholarships and aid.

Is Kelly that much better than UMiami that I should sacrifice a better environment to attend?

UMiami: major in finance and management science (engineering in business)
Kelly: major in finance and economics

(I intend to apply to top MBA programs after college)

Are you kidding me? Go to UMiami and I promise that you'll be the happiest person in the world.

unless u wanna do ibanking then kelley has their program

how good/respectable is their Ibanking workshop kmzizzle ?

Kelly is very respected and generally underrated. I imagine their business students are more intellectually predisposed than the rest of their student-body.

IU for the academics and connections. UMiami for the girls, partying, and climate.

their ibanking workshop has close to 100% placement rate
you have to apply to get in it however

kmzizzle... do you attend IU... or are you in the ibanking workshop?

therightway... may i ask why you posted the topic the Kellly SChool of Businss vs. UMIAMI.. instead of just IU vs UMIAMI?... is it because people think IU is a party school?

UMiami is a better school in a better location. To tell someone to go to UMiami for the parties and climate is crazy? Where do you plan on living? If you plan on living anywhere in the south UMiami's name will get you much further than IU. Miami overall is also ranked much higher, Miami are not chumps when it comes to a business school.

I've read partying at kelley is pretty hardcore too

TheRightWayLeft,

Have you heard back from IU's financial aid dept?

Did you apply for scholarships? Which ones?

-No, I posted Kelly instead of IU to get a more accurate response.
-I am not interested in working 120 hour workweeks, regardless of pay, and therefore am not interested in IBanking. However, I do not plan to live in the south either. I live in NY and hope to get a job in the city after my B.S.
-IU is way more of a party school than Miami (only referring to the school itself and not the surrounding cities). Unfortunately, more recruiters/employers see Miami as one of the top party schools in the country because of the playboy rankings of the late 80’s, which are the rankings of their generation.
-I have not received my financial aid package yet. I am a transfer student from out of state and was told that I wasn’t eligible for any scholarships. I hope I wasn’t misinformed.

So being from NY and not interested in IBanking, what do you think- UMiami or Kelly?

I myself.. just finished my freshmen year at IU.. I plan on majoring in Accounting and Finance... I am from New Jersey.. So i think we have alot of similarities. But i plan on transferring out of IU... to some northeast schools or USC....

Between IU and MIAMI... i would pick IU because it is a better bschool than MIAMI...

No, will be applying there for next year

to say IU is better than Miami is nuts

I wouldn't worry about schools with a "party" name.. a company isn't going to turn you down for that, especially because they know UM is a great school. UM is constantly moving up.. the dean of their business school is the old dean from UPenn-Wharton. Pick UM, its a better school.

UM is without question a better school than IU and iee didn't say otherwise.. iee wrote, "i would pick IU because it is a better bschool than MIAMI..." He said bschool not school. I had to read it twice to catch it myself.

Anyway, the party school rep isn't what would stop me from going there, but if I'm going to a "party school" then I at least want the opportunity to enjoy some serious parties hah. It’s like being accused of cheating on your gf with her hot friend, when you never even got to hit skins. It just sucks that it's falsely proclaimed as a party school, that's all.

I completely agree with you, its not our fault its a good school in a city with a party attitude. What do you expect though? Miami can be paradise with money.. or complete hell without money. Something to take into consideration with Miami is the housing is very expensive. I am paying 900 dollars for my half of the rent in coconut grove.. its a pretty average price and it is very easy to pay less and end up in pretty scary ghettos. Most people don't realize Miami is a VERY dangerous city and there are definitely more bad areas than good areas. Coral Gables is however one of the best parts of Miami with a low crime rate.

If you want Business IU is better without question... who cares if UM is a better Univ as a whole...

As business schools go, Indiana (Kelley) has consistently outranked the University of Miami, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

To give you an idea, their undergraduate rankings (nationally)per USNW are as follows:
Entrepreneurship #2
Business - Legal Studies #4 (though USNW doesn't rate this every year)
Finance #7
Management #7
and computer science, real estate, marketing, and accounting are all ranked in the top 10.

Overall, I believe they were ranked #17 last year (as a result of needing some facilities upgrades), but they have been ranked in the top #11 every year (except last year) for the past 7 years. (and I'm sure they will return to the higher levels next year once their facilities upgrades--currently in progress--are completed).

At the graduate level, the Wall Street Journal ranks their faculty as #1--ahead of Stanford (#2), Harvard (#9) and every other school in the country.
They only rank #24 overall in business from USNW--but that's still far better than Miami which ranked about #70 in this category.

Also, don't be confused by the IU average SAT score of 1189. The business School's average SAT is over 1290, and has gone up over 70 points in the past two years and will be higher again once the new class just admitted has their numbers averaged in.

IU - Bloomington's average admit rate is 70%, but the business school's admit rate is about 25%--and the direct admit rate is only 15%. Average grade average for the school--about 3.1--for Kelley, about 3.57.

In other words, the business school at IU - Bloomington is quite a bit more advanced than the average department at the school. The only three generally that are as challenging there (in addition to business) are the music, journalism and foreign language departments.

yes calcruzer.. is dead on but here is the problem... i strongly believe the Kelley school of business is at its peak right now... i do not think it will move up in the rankings.. and there is a reason why all the kids taht cant get into the ross business school at MICH there sophmore years transfer to the KSB...
