Kenyon College?

Does anyone know any details about the music program at Kenyon College?

I plan to go into vocal performance but would not be surprised if I eventually lean towards the more academic side of music such as music history or theory. My ultimate concentration in music will simply depend on time and my experience in college!

With that said, I am looking for a serious music program in a liberal arts college. Kenyon's Music Department website gives the impression that the music program is pretty strong, but I cannot tell for sure.

I would greatly appreciate your input! Thanks in advance.

for academic musicology, LAC’s with strong programs are Williams, Amherst, Smith, Oberlin. Just looking at the faculty list at Kenyon, it seems weighted toward Baroque and earlier, with theory taught by composers. It may be perfectly fine, but doesn’t seem like a particular emphasis at the school. Just about all LAC’s have music departments of about the size of Kenyon’s (i.e., small – Oberlin is an exception, with a small music history department, of 4, soon to be 5 full time faculty, and a larger music theory department, as well as a small historical performance faculty), but have some outstanding faculty, because the job market is so abysmal; the winner of last year’s AMS-50 (a big honor), was one of the lucky few to land a job, and it was at Muhlenberg - so you probably can find excellent courses just about anywhere. If you want an environment steeped in music, though, Kenyon doesn’t seem like your best bet.

Thanks for your repsonse, mamenyu!

Oberlin is one of my dream schools, but the voice program is incredibly competitive–not to mention the steep cost of the school in general. I was just looking for alternatives, and I think, based on your response and my research, that Kenyon does not provide what I want in a music program. Besides, Kenyon costs just as much as Oberlin but probably has less money to offer for financial aid.
