okay the first time i took the sat i got a 710 in reading, 800 in maths, and 750 in writing. The second time i took it i got an 800 in reading, 620 in maths, and 800 in writing. I sent in my first scores before getting my second scores. So my question is, should i send in the second bunch of scores or not?

umm...definitely. you'd have a 2400 if you sent in the new scores.

yeah but my math scores plummeted. will that matter?

Have you sent in your SAT II scores yet? All of your scores from the SAT I will be on the score report when you send in SAT II scores, and you have to send in SAT II scores to MIT.

yeah i already have. I retook reasoning after sending my subject test scores.

Tough choice. Theoretically I'm pretty sure MIT officially considers only your highest score in each category (can someone confirm this?), but they do see it all (just like they see the writing score although they "don't use" it), so I expect that it must at least have some influence.

I'd send in both scores because even though your 2nd math score is only a 620, they still see your (presumably) high SAT 2 math score and math grades and will know that you are, in fact, good at math (not that a 620 is that bad, I'm just saying that they'll know you're capable of an 800 - especially since you got it once).

I'm told that an 800 in CR is rare enough among math science types that it looks impressive and even though Writing is not really being evaluated this year, I can't help thinking it will raise a few eyebrows.

I am really wondering "how come your Math 800--->620?"

aright well, what i would probably do is send in my scores, but also send the admissions office an e-mail saying that during the second administration of the SAT, I was focused mainly on raising my critical reading and writing scores, and didn't worry much about the math.

MIT Admissions will only consider the scores that make you look best. The end. Problem solved. =)
