Knox or Wooster or Depauw

Hello Everyone!!

I am an international student from Pakistan and I have offers three offered currently. In the bracket is the amount listed that I’ll have to pay to the universities

Wooster (21K)
Knox College (19K)
DePauw University (26K)

I intend to pursue the 3-2 ENgineering program at either universities and thus, I’ll be majoring in either Chemistry or Physics.

Please recommend a college telling about its environment and surroundings

Why are you going to these schools if you want eng’g? how will you pay for the “2” school?

Why didn’t you apply to eng’g schools that would give you similar awards?

What are your stats??

<<<
GPA = 3.92/4
ACT = 31 Composite with a 34 in Math
<<<

With those stats, you could get very good merit from UAH…excellent eng’g and they’re still accepting apps and awarding merit.

What is UAH?

Nevermind I found it. It’s ranking is not that good. I applied earlier in RD to 18 unis but I didnt get a good enough aid package from anywhere and was rejected from most places due to a greater demand of aid. However, I have increased my contribution now.

Ranking isn’t everything, and UAH is very well respected for its engineering programs. NASA has an outpost in Huntsville as well. Getting a four-year engineering degree at UAH would be better than spending 3 years at one of the above and then realizing that you can’t transfer to the “2” school because you can’t afford it.

That said, the choice between these three schools depends on what you like. They’re all about equivalent in terms of reputation and size. They’re all in relatively small towns/cities.

In terms of future employment opportunities, which do you think is better between the above 3 colleges? Knox will be the best for me as it is affordable. Wooster and Depauw get out of range for me a bit. @julliet @mom2collegekids

Probably about the same. If Knox is the only one that’s affordable, and Wooster and DePauw are out of range, you should go to Knox.

Knox is a very neat place, and they have recently renovated/expanded their science buildings. There is a new fine arts building going up, as well as a new soccer field. After sitting in on class at more than 10 schools, my son thought the Knox class was the best – inspiring, energetic professor who changed the way he thought about some things, with great student participation. The student body at Knox is inclusive and tolerant, and there is great school spirit. As long as the program you want, and the money, works, Knox is great place to go. The faculty and administration are dedicated to the students’ success, and we know kids from Knox who have gone on to do great work. Congrats!

Its ranking is fine for eng’g, and it has excellent eng’g. You’re being naive. It is well-respected and sits inside Cummins Research Park…the second largest research park in the nation, 4th largest in the world. Lots of internship and co-ops. The grads walk right into well-paying jobs.

How are you supposed to do any co-ops or internships while at the 3 school when you won’t be doing eng’g then?

How are you going to pay for those last two years? You likely will get NO aid for those last two years.

Do yourself a favor and send an app to UAH. If they end up giving you a lot of money and the net cost is much lower, then go there.

All three are in small towns.

DePauw is heavily Greek.

Weren’t deposits due on Sunday? How are you still deciding now? Did you send a deposit into any of these schools?

Didn’t you post this under “College Admissions” also?

@me29034 I was given an extended time period until the 6th.

@gandalf78 @me29034 @mom2collegekids @momofthreeboys @Mom2aphysicsgeek @Midwestmomofboys @juillet Could any of you recommend any other good instituition where I could get a good scholarship with a 31 ACT and 3.92 GPA. for engineering? My mom didn’t like UAH.

It is late. I don’t know about schools still taking applications and offering $$. Sorry. But, I am with @mom2collegekids. I would not choose a 3/2 school. Are all 3 3/2 schools? (they are not schools I have ever looked into for engineering. I am familiar with Wooster’s physics dept, but it was too limited for our ds.) If they are, I also agree with @mom2collegekids that if you can still attend UAH that it would be a good choice.

Fwiw, ranking is not the way I would choose a school. It would be
1- is it affordable
2- does it offer the major I want
3- does it have support and connections with industry (which UAH does bc it has excellent connections with Cummings Research Park

Your mother not liking the ranking does not change the fact that it has a lot to offer and is a solid engineering choice.

“My mom didn’t like UAH.”

??

Your mom lives in another country… How would she know enough about UAH to form an opinion??

Your mom did not like UAH, where you could have majored in engineering and attended for FREE with those ACT scores, but you are considering Knox College, a tiny LAC?

@TytoAlba and @mom2collegekids I read online reviews that the Housing system is very messed up and the general reviews were bad, I have submitted my application to them. If you could tell me about UAH a bit further in detail, life if you have an personal experience or how the Aerospace Department is as I intend to major in Aerospace engineering.

Your mother must have a plan for you to get into what she feels are better engineering programs through 3-2 programs. The advantage to you is to also get a fine liberal arts college education to be a well educated person.

The plan is sound many people choose that path for the same reason of wanting both. I suggest you look up information on those schools here on their sections in College Confidential. You and your family did a good job of getting you into 3-2 programs at three different schools.

We did a lot of reaearch on Knox College. It is a very nice school in general.

UAH is better for engineering than Knox. Know is better for liberal arts.
I’d cross out De Pauw for a kid from Pakistan due to the alcohol issues (more severe than elsewhere).
