One's performance on the USMLE, will obviously vary. Although I have not reached that stage or intend to, I have heard that many medical students independently study on their own, often covering areas that were not mentioned in lecture prior to completing their medical education. Some even take 1 year to study. As for residencies, I'm not too familar with what happens and where one is placed after their USMLE examination. Hence no residency is "crappy," infact landing a residency especially in the U.S. is a difficult and selective process. Plus to be honest, I am not sure about the whole residency process and as evident I would not be qualified to even give you advice or direction in this are considering I did not complete my medical education/nor intend to. I suggest you talk with a practicing M.D. who studied and graduated from medical school in Pakistan for information.

Salamzz..
I'm currently in US and would like to apply to Pakistan's Medical Colleges, specifically in Lahore. I am from Punjab and was born in Pakistan as well.
1) Is it possible for me to apply as a local student and not foreign, is there any way i can get around the restriction??
2) The donations fees for foreign students are extremely high, as well as self-financial for medical colleges, are there any loans/scholarships/government help anything available for help?

PLEASE do let me know.. i really need help....as my grades are excellent with Gpa of 4.75. pleaseee hellp mee !!
Thanks...
Jazakallah

You have also mentioned above that foreign students do not have to take the entry test for admissions. But if i'm trying to apply to Fatima Jinnah or King Edward, do they require to see my SAT scores or only my high -school performance?
Thanks once again...

my question?? :(:( please answer

First of all, yes you have to apply as a U.S. national. Im assuming you went to high school here in the U.S. so unfortunately you are subject to apply on the foreign basis. Also, Fatimah Jinnah will look at your SAT score and high school performance if you have not recieved any Bachelors degree from college. Also there are is no "financial assistance" available for foreign students.

Quick Question:

Let's say I'm going into my second year in college in the US and I want to complete the four years, earn my bachler's and then apply for medical school in pakistan. Now, I know that it's normally 5 years but if I did the pre-med requirements here can I skip a year and go straight into the medical stuff as I would in a US med school? Also would they still look at my high school grades even if I graduated from college? Also, do they also want recs, MCAT scores and EC like US school do or is it primarily only based on your grades.

Last question, although this might subjective, what at the top 5 med schools in pakistan (gov't&private).

Thanks again!

can anyone who is a current student at Aga Khan or has visited the campus comment on the Hostels where foreign students or students not from karachi live? or even any info about the campus.

basically i would like to konw how a student that lives overseas will attend aku and live in the hostel. i am a male if that makes any difference.

the aga khan website is very vague and doesn't have any pictures of the campus at all so any information or pictures anyone can share will be very helpful to me.

thanks in advance.

Can you please tell you what is an associates degree in science from Us equivalent to in any of the Universities in Pakistan. Can i apply into a medical school in Pakistan? My SAT and ACT are not very high. However I have taken enough science courses during my high school year and passed them with an A.What would be my best option?

If you really want to do med school in Pakistan then all the undergrad degree in the US will do for you is make you better prepared for med school and you'll be way ahead of your class in maturity and approach.
Other than that, you won't be able to "skip" a year becuase of your degree.
I know med school in the US is difficult to get in, but if you do an undergrad here, try to do med school in the US. If you can't then Aga Khan would be the best option since you know you'll finish in 5 years. other med schools can take up to 6-7 years depending on the political situation, although lately they've been good about finishing in 6 years.

ahhgzkhan: answer to your question. Being a Pakistani citizen is not what matters. What matters is your parents/guardiance country of residence.
So if you want to pay less and be considered a pakistani, you need to show your guardians are in Pakistan. many people have done and have been successful. the moment you say your parents are abroad, you get charged the "foreign" fee. hope this helps.

I'm back after a well deserved hiatus. Now to answer your questions:

ahhgzkhan: if you went to any other school outside of Pakistan you are considered a "foreign student" and will be charged as a foreign student. Unless however, you for example went to 11th grade in the United States, then returned back to pakistan and completed 12th grade there. Most importantly, if you are a citizen of any other country besides PK you are a foreign student unless you can prove otherwise, which would furthur place you in illegal practices. In your case, my best bet would be that you will be liable for foreign student charges since you've done your schooling outside of Pakistan.

tangents: Earning a degree in the U.S. is always a good thing and beneficial in most cases. However, even if you took pre-medical courses or pre-reqs here in the U.S. they WILL NOT give you any sort of advancement, nor will they allow you to skip a year and go on to the second. Every candidate, regardless of their educational attainment either in the U.S., Europe, or Pakistan must complete the 5 year mandatory M.B.B.S. curriculum. Also hence, to apply there is a maximum age requirement, I believe its 23 (but this must be confirmed.) Many students complete college in the U.S. and then apply to Aga Khan for medical school from the U.S.. Again you have to complete the 5 year duration and their is no advancement or sorry for the lack of a better word "skipping." Also if you "GRADUATED" from college and completed PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, AND MATH THEN YES THEY WILL ONLY LOOK AT YOU COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT, OTHERWISE IN CASE YOU DID NOT THEN ITS BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL. Furthur if you take the MCATS then that would be beyond helpful (obviously if you score well) for Aga Khan. I believe they demand SAT (not ACT scores) and (or) MCAT scores! By the way... It all about your grades!

manutdfan2850: the hostels at AKU are luxurious compared to Pakistani standards. If your paying several thousand of DOLLARS, you can expect to get a descent share in living arrangements. Also the number of U.S. students that "flock" to AKU should tell you something about their resources. Plus its in the city of Karachi, and if you are living abroad a taxi shall do it (unless you have family of course...but theres nothing like Lahore). Despite what you hear, Karachi is a bit unsafe as compared to Lahore. But crimes to happen and are unexpected (god forbid). Also it rains alot in Karachi during the monsoon season which can lead to flooding and leakege of sewer water and despite Karachi being near water, water in it avalability is rare and often runs out in most occassions.

In response to bai, medical schools in Pakistan run on a five year duration, unless you fail a year it may be more.
