Lab Placement advantageous??

During the summer or maybe even after the summer, I will be working at this neuroscientist's lab from 9am-5pm mon-fri.... i know dats crazy and waste of my summer, but guess its worthy it. PS: I was actually qualified for the position/placement; i placed third at NeUROSCIENCE OLYMPIAD. Its possible that I might contribute to the publication of research paper.

Will this be really helpful in applying Johns Hopkins for Early Decision?

ACT:29
GPA:4.0
Subject tests: expecting 750+ in math2, chem and bio.
I also have some other awards from math contests, science olympic, swimming, etc
and leadership positions too

well, i thought it would be beneficial cuz johns hopkins is one of the best research universities…and figured dat they would favour those who had had an experience in a research lab

Working in a neuroscience lab is a perfectly fine use of your summer. If you raise your ACT/SAT and work hard on your essays, you’ll have a better chance.

Yeah I am, too. But for us it’s mandatory. Everyone who is in Science Research (10 kids/grade of ~400) is required to work in a lab the summer before senior year. Math Research and Social Science Research (both also 10 kids per grade) have to not necessarily work in a lab per-say, but an equivalent environment.

I’m doing Neuro this summer too (my mom is actually a Neurologist-- funny enough, she did her residency at Johns Hopkins-- so she helped score me +2 others from our year’s Science Research class spots with super amazing lab placements). Surprisingly enough, I don’t even like science all that much (though perhaps it was Science Research in the first place that turned me off, after spending these last 2 years spending 20+ hours per week out of school working on this shiz and having to cancel 4 family vacations to be in school every other day and also go in on weekends. grrr, just thinking about it annoys me lol.) But I’m actually really excited for this summer!

Do you know who your mentor is and/or what you are doing? Also, what lab? There’s a good chance my mom might know the person…

P.S. I gotta leave the house each morning at 7, start working at 8, and not leave the lab until like 5 or so every weekday during this summer, so yeah, I feel your pain lol. I even have to go in on my freakin’ birthday!

Sheena Josselyn, shes published many famous research papers with Eric Kandel and other prestigious neuroscientists regarding change in the brain during learning and memory.

Same question also goes to u, and what kind of stuff r u doin

Aristea Galanoupolou (sp?) Lol. I’m working at Albert Einstein under her. She does various studies regarding neurology, mainly epilepsy (most using rat brain splices, which I will use this summer. fun times.). She has a few studies going about GABA in the brain and differences in response by sex. I’ll probably be doing one of her others studies about neuronrecepters and neuro transmitters in the brain and proteins related to epilepsy. I will hopefully discover my own neuro pathway in epilepsy for a protein that has never been traced before. That’s what the kids she mentored the last two summers did, and both were at least semi-finalists at Intel (at don’t remember how far they progressed)

nice lol btw, how did u get to know her in the first place/??? i mean how did u find out bout the lab placemnt?

My mom is a neurologist (did her residency at Johns Hopkins. I see you’re interested in going there), and she’s good friends with her, so my mom told her I was looking for a mentor and she offered for me to work with her.

How did you find out about your mentor?

ur so lucky…lol i actually had to get qualified for it…
Anyway, its gonna be a good experience and opportunity to do well and leave a good impression which can help u wen applying for university.

Im gonna ask my mentor for reference letter, she did her post-doc at yale school of medicine. (im applying johns hopkins lol)

Yeah, I’m really happy. Everyone else (except the 2 others in my class my mom got placements for) had to apply to all these mentors and programs. I just got to say “okay” to my mentor and I was done. So it did come in handy lol.

Good luck applying to Johns Hopkins! (:

thanks,
where are u thinkin of applyin to? for wut program?
i believe u want to go into medine?

Surprisingly, I don’t plan to go into medicine. I decided a little more than a year ago that it’s not for me. Instead I want to go into International Business. So I’m Applying to UPenn for Huntsman/Wharton ED.

ohh nice, good luk with dat!! u’ll get in :)

Haha yeah right! But I can dream (:
