<p>Since I teach at a small LAC we have tuition exchange arrangements with many other small LAC. My son is interested in Theatre (acting), but he has no illusions about pursuing a career in theatre of film. Does anyone know anything about the theatre program at the following colleges:
Sewanee
Centre
Hampden Sydney
Muhlenberg (the people on the theatre thread say good things)
Beloit
Fordham, Syracuse and Catholic are also part of the tuition exchange program. All have excellent theatre programs, but we prefer a smaller LAC</p>
<p>I know a freshmen who's going to Muhlenberg on tuition exchange for theater. What a coincidence! As far as I know, he's incredibly happy there, has joined multiple musical and theater groups. I haven't heard much about the actual theater program from his family yet, but overall, it's got a great reputation.</p>
<p>I don't know anyone in the theatre program at Muhlenberg but have visited the theatre. It's beautiful!</p>

<p>At the risk of sounding like a shill for my daughter's school, Beloit is a great school for creative types. The theater program is strong and comprehensive, with good facilities, and several student productions plus visiting productions each year. There are also film production opportunities at Beloit and a growing city-run annual independent film festival that brings directors and actors to campus. Another plus at Beloit, and at other members of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, is the ACM Chicago Semester in the Arts program, which puts students in the thick of the Chicago art and theater scene with great internships built in (link: <a href="http://www.acm.edu/cap/index.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.acm.edu/cap/index.htm</a>) Again, it's a great place for creative, free-spirited types, with an incredibly supportive and involved faculty. <p>I don't know much about the theater programs at the other schools, but they are all great in terms of overall academcs (but have a different feel than Beloit) I'd be curious to know more about Hampden Sydney's theater program - how do they manage without female actors? Maybe they use students from other colleges? And, I'd visit the theater program at Syracuse in particular - although it is within a university, the theater program itself feels very personal and small, and it is excellent.</p>

<p>The more I look into Beloit, the better it looks. My son is a weird combo of left-libertarian, a reasonable rebel who is very bright, but like me not readily schooled (I would not have gotten into the college I am a professor at). My son was being contacted by colleges to play football, but he quit 3 weeks ago because he wants to act in the school play and take classes in the evening</p>
<p>I have been keeping my eye on Beloit and the more I look, the better it looks - one of the hidden gems that are overlooked by parents who are more concerned about what goes on the rear window of their car than what may be best for the child. I teach at a college that takes pride in its immense workload, low mean GPA and its unstated motto - 'the joy of rigour'. Frankly, I do not like the idea of subjecting my son to that kind of organization. Any isights re: the learning culture at Beloit? Is the campus nice?</p>
