LAC with great CS programs

Hi!

I'm looking for Liberal Arts Colleges, which have great accredited, Computer Science undergrad courses, with affordable/low Cost of Attendance for Internationals. Like:

Vassar
Williams
Berea
Colgate
Hamilton

However, I only know that these colleges offer great Financial Aid. How are their CS Programs?

Thanks!

Start looking at course catalogs, and check frequency of offering as well. Look for junior and senior level courses like:

algorithms and complexity
theory of computation, languages, and automata
operating systems
compilers
networks
databases
security and cryptography
software engineering
hardware courses like computer architecture and digital systems
electives like graphics, artificial intelligence, etc.
math courses in abstract algebra and number theory

If you want an ABET accredited CS degree program, you can check http://www.abet.org . However, there are good (and poor) CS degree programs which are not ABET accredited. ABET accreditation is mainly an assurance that the CS degree program is at least decent, so if a CS degree program has ABET accreditation, that can be a short cut in determining that it is at least decent, and not of poor quality.

In the job market, ABET accreditation in CS is not routinely an issue (unlike in engineering areas where licensing is an issue), except in a few areas like patent agent and patent lawyer.

Hi!
@ucbalumnus-

What do you mean by ‘frequency’?
In terms of employment, I digged into their Payscale.com reports; and it turns out other than Williams, Payscale doesn’t have enough data on employment/salary for their CS Majors, and William has pretty good salaries.

Is ABET accreditation necessary for applying to graduate courses later on?

Do you know any other such LACs?

Thanks!

Frequency means how often a course is offered. Every semester is optimal; every year is ok; every two years is marginal.

ABET accreditation is not necessary for graduate school in CS, but a solid foundation of CS courses is necessary, and undergraduate research is desirable.

Other small schools (not necessarily LACs) with good CS include Caltech, Harvey Mudd, and Bucknell. Less selective and less expensive is New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Oh, OK.

Understood.

Thanks!
