Lack of extracurriculars

In most cases (at least where we live), outside-of-school ECs require transportation that parents may not be able to provide. In our family, with 3 kids and 2 working parents, we have limited ECs external to school to keep life sane: each kid gets one. When we discussed this with several AOs, they said they consider the applicant within the context of opportunities they have and that we should describe this in the application so they have the right context for our daughter. I guess we will find out on M10 if they meant it or not.

Might be a valid reason for applying to boarding schools as many large cities require daily time consuming commutes to EC activities.

One reason we preferred boarding school was to eliminate 45 minute to one hour commutes each way in stress inducing, congested traffic. Thought that that wasted time could be put to much better use at a prep boarding school.

Our son applied with two ECs, one done at home and one at school (walking distance). We weren’t willing to drive him anywhere for anything (ever). Didn’t seem to matter. Please stop stressing about things over which you have no control or are too late to change.

@YoungThriver Those are two very good extracurriculars. Maybe I’m not the most reliable source, but I don’t think your ECs will be red flags in your application.

@YoungThriver if you are applying to be a lower mid, I think I know one school where you are applying as I was once a lower mid (before you were born!) I think the important point here is that ECs can be broadly defined - literally any activity that you are committed to inside or out of school can be an EC but that said, schools prefer quality over quantity so I would

  1. Give some extra details about your 2 ECs which are both great! Did you help solve a particular problem? Did you expand the group? Mention one or two points similar to this if possible.
  2. Only list activities that are meaningful to you but they can include things like volunteering or babysitting and don’t hesitate to add some context too. Why do you have just 2? Is it due to siblings or transportation or family funds? It is okay for you or a parent to give some extra info if this is relevant but just 2 activities is fine too no worries!

My daughter who is now a junior at BS said she had zero ECs the first time I asked her about them because no one at her school calls them that— she is an RA, an art proctor, started a club, gives tours etc. ? Sometimes we old timers forget that some things that are obvious to us are still a bit mysterious to students who haven’t heard the acronyms.
