I hear you all on trying to find “right matches” rather than reaches. It is so hard! Still figuring out how to know what a match even is, or a safety. I don’t really know how to find them. There are certainly schools unfamiliar to me that would be a good choice. My son seems to have a little better idea simply by looking at last year’s and this year’s seniors from his school, both in academic status and personality, and where they are ending up.
This was so much easier back when we applied. A bunch of reaches and one safety, and that was that! My husband literally applied to 2 colleges, the one he wanted (and attended), and a safety.
More western PA. But Washington and Jefferson is a great little school.
@timeflies2 Yes, I think it’s a lot more complicated than back in the day! In my experience, it’s tougher this year than when my S applied 5 years ago.
You mentioned your S goes to a large, competitive public. Have you checked Naviance to see if there is a pattern of LAC acceptances? Also, consider what your son’s weighted GPA is - it might look better than you think if he has taken honors or AP classes.
Have you consulted the Fiske Guide? It was my favorite college book for its descriptions and “other schools to consider” suggestions.
Yes, Fiske is excellent. There are many excellent LACs and if you are looking for merit, plus a great college, consider getting out of the Northeast. There are some wonderful LACs in the Midwest that would love to have your son.
