Thank you so much for the information @happy1. This is very helpful. I will make sure she brings her activities resume. I did do the net price calculator. I was hoping to get a complete review, as other schools have requested we send them our tax returns along with the completed NPC info for their review. I’m just not sure how Lafayette handles this. I’m assuming I need to go through the coach. I imagine I will get more info when we go to the OV.

How was your experience with the ED admission process? Were you confident going in that your D would be accepted? Any tips or insights are appreciated. This is our oldest child and first college experience so it’s a bit stressful dealing with the ins and outs of the college search, especially with athletics also being considered.

@jopac62 - The hard part for my D was deciding if she wanted to apply ED. She was down to two favorite schools in the fall of her senior year and then we visited them both for a day (she interviewed and shadowed a student for a day at Lafayette) and she decided that Lafayette was her top choice. We did maintain a list of some other schools that she liked and she felt she could have been happy at if Lafayette didn’t work out. Our experience with ED at Lafayette was basically that she applied ED, we crossed our fingers, and were thrilled when she was accepted. The acceptance came in the form of a lovely personalized letter that came via snail mail (although in all honesty once she saw the big folder saying “Congratulations” she was off to the races-and didn’t read the actual acceptance letter until later). Her stats were solidly withing range (especially for ED) and she had strong ECs and we believe that her recommendations would have been very good and personalized so we were hopeful – but you never know for certain until the envelope arrives. She was not a recruited athlete, is not a legacy so we had no “hook”. The process may work a bit differently if your D is a recruited athlete (I don’t know).

As a mom who has been through the process with two kids, I think a big key is to be sure your D knows that there are a ton of great schools out there. It is fine to have a top choice and to apply ED, but if for any reason that doesn’t work out, it is important to move forward to another great school which would be lucky to have her. The only kids I have seen “hurt” by the college admission process are people who fixate on one school, convince themselves that it is the “only” place to go and then don’t get in.

Good luck.

PS also for the interview my D prepared a few questions about Lafayette in advance so she would be ready in case she was asked. She put her questions on an index card (in case she froze which she did not) and carried them into the interview in a folder than had the index card and a couple of copies of her resume.

Hi, I’m a international student and I wanted to know about the loans included in a financial package. Can you please give me an idea of the average indebtedness of an international student at graduation? Thanks :)

@thenooblord The FA package for Int’l students usually includes the Mengel Loan (or something very similar). It’s the loan from the institution, as Int’l students don’t get federal loans. Average indebtedness at graduation is $14k - $15k.

Hi! I was wondering what the overall student vibe was like at Lafayette? I am definitely thinking about ED but I haven’t gotten a chance to get to know what the people are like. I’m not sure if I’m looking for an answer that categorizes students (example: jock, preppy, or nerd) but really want to get an understanding of who “fits in.”

My D is a student at Lafayette now (hopefully some current/recent students will chime here). Overall I get the impression that although it is small, Lafayette has a very good mix of people and that people so everyone should be able to find his/her crowd. And equally important people seem to be able to mix together well as they pursue multiple interests (ex. my D has worked on theater productions where a football player or two were part of the backstage crew, engineering students play varsity sports etc.).

I can’t answer the first question, my only experience with snow has been Easton.

Yes, students do take trips to ski. There’s a ski and snowboarding club, that was active the last two years at least. I’m unsure how they’re doing this year (I’ve graduated).

Here’s their website. Hopefully it can be of some help.

Here is another question. Does Lafayette attract a geographically diverse student body? It seems that the fierce rivalry with Lehigh is very locally focused and in looking at the soccer team recruits online they also seem to all be from the general area. Is this an accurate perception?

or the USNWR site and others which for Laf in 2013 shows.
Out-of-state students 79% (50%+ are MidAtlantic)
International students 6%
Countries most represented by international students China (41%), Nepal (6%), Vietnam (6%), India (4%), Pakistan (3%), South Korea (3%)

Just a note on what @worldspirit said, the USNWR info is sort of obsolete. Lafayette’s been getting more and more applicants, and has been more diverse in recent year. The link to the class profile is a much better resource, since it’s the latest numbers.

Thanks @worldspirit I had seen the data to which you refer. I was curious whether the high out of state percentage was really just a large number of students from nearby states. The percentage of students from mid-Atlantic states fuels that curiosity.

Hi @deborahb I’m a first year student at Lafayette and I came here from Kansas and two of my best friends here are from Louisiana and New Mexico so definitely nowhere near the mid-atlantic! Yes it’s true a vast majority of Lafayette students are from the mid-Atlantic and New England but I’ve never felt like it was overwhelming or that being from outside the East Coast was weird, not to mention all the international students on campus! So while many of the students here do come from around the same area, I would say there is definitely a good amount of geographic diversity on campus!

That is awesome, thank you @shortstack18! We visited last week and my son absolutely loved it. The campus is beautiful, the people were friendly, the school is academically excellent! It is neck and neck with Rice for first place on my son’s college list!

Hi everyone, Im an international student who is applying ED to Lafayette. I have a question about submitting CSS profile. I have already submitted the profile on november 9th but college board said the scheduled report date will be on 24th In the email I received from Lafayette adcom after my common app submission, the officers wrote: “As a matter of practice, Lafayette College may withhold admissions decisions for those candidates who indicated on their application that they are applying for financial aid, but have not submitted the neccessary financial aid documents to complete their financial aid application”. So I wonder if they might process and defer my application BEFORE receiving my css profile on november 24th.

Just email Lafayette admissions (or Eugene Gabay) and let them know what’s going on. They’re very good about these things. Besides, they’ll get it before the application due date, so it might not even matter.
