Hi everyone! So i have narrowed my colleges down to these two: Lafayette College and Franklin and Marshall. I really like them both and I really cant decide! I like how lafayette is D1 and the social scene that comes with that but Im worried everyone there is just rich white kids. I also like Franklin and Marshall but Im worried its too much like highschool and the social scene is weird… anyone have any thoughts?
Hi!
I’ve visited both schools and I can honestly say that both schools are very impressive. That being said, they are very similar- they are roughly the same size with relatively similarly designed campuses. I lean toward F&M only because of the location. Lancaster is a great small city. The school is a ten minute walk from downtown which is full of nightclubs, restaurants, hotels, and shops. The school itself is situated in a beautiful area with both residential homes and businesses. Easton, however, is not quite a quaint. It has seen better days and there isn’t much to do. What little they do have to occupy a college student is a near impossible walk or bus ride away. Also, F&M is by no means a school with no character or spirit. They are D3 for most sports (wrestling being the exception) but their basketball coach has the most wins for any D3 coach and they are very well respected. People will always rep their school with F&M clothes and parties are relatively common so there is no shortage of a social scene. Hope this helps!
Lafayette is basically F&M, but better. Can’t pass up the sports. It seems like you are already leaning toward Lafayette and it had better name recognition.
Lafayette would be a great D3 college. Why do they waste their time and money on D1 sports? D1 sports interferes with internships, co-ops, clinicals, international semesters, as well jaunts to Wall Street interviews. Give that money to the brilliant ones who need it.
^^so would Notre Dame and Duke, but that is not their culture. LC is already an outstanding D1 college with a top 50 endowment per student. Let’s not be so quick to spend other people’s money.
If the OP prefers F&M, it is a great school, there are many other great D3 schools, too. Few colleges or universities in the country have more money to spend per student than LC, however - This is tied to their identity and alumni support.
Alumni support. Thanks. I just needed to hear it said. Lafayette is a great college and statistics show the alumni to be strong. S2 got a vibe during the visit and went D3.
On the west coast, few people have heard of Lafayette but most people know Franklin and Marshall. If west coast name recognition means anything to you, I thought I’d mention it.
