Lafayette questions and answers part ii! (2012-13)

Hi ivanevtimov5,

Sorry it’s been a few days. I’ve been swamped with work!

Lafayette has very strong math and economics departments. As a small school, it is less well known throughout the whole country, but on the east coast it is VERY well respected and is thought of by employers with high regards. Lafayette also has strong ties to alumni, and this gives students connections that land them externships, internships, and ultimately job offers.

There is a health office on campus (Bailey’s Health Center) which sees students and provides minor care for free.

As for excursions with ISA, once again I’d like to refer you to sixstringsrocker who will know more…he should be posting soon.

Let me know if there’s anything else!

Taylor

Hi, Taylor!

No problem at all about the delay!

I just want to add that your answers are going to be extremely valuable to me in the following days as I decide which school to attend. I have also been offered a place at Reed, which I find a a great college too, so my decision is not going to be an easy one.

Anyway, thank you very much! :)

@ivanevtimov5 congratulations on admittance at Reed as well. I assume that since you are international you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Reed. But I would just like to highlight that Reed is very, very different from Lafayette. Based on what you said above, and from the students I know who went there and other information I have from other university professionals in the Portland area, I am not convinced that Reed would be the best fit for you. Clearly, it is up to you what you make of your opportunities, but definitely do some further research on the student life and surrounding issues that may exist at Reed.

Dear Captain and Sixstring and anyone else who may know… Slightly new topic. What can you tell me about the Investment Club? The website gives general info. about it, but the club “Archives” are available only through 2011, so I’m wondering if it is still an active club and how popular it may be. At some LACS, Investment Clubs are open only to senior business/economics majors who make all the decisions about how available money will be invested. Is this the case at Laf as well, or is the Club open to more grades and majors? H.S. Jr. Son has academic interests in economics, business, and math, loves to play with money (!), so any info. you could provide about these academic and activity areas (esp. the mathematics-economics major) would be terrific. Thank you.

@itsmygop,

I do not know much about the investment club, but I contacted a student that does :)

He says…

"The investment club is very opened to everyone. All majors and grades are welcomed. On Mondays, there are open board meetings and on Friday also open door general meetings in which people who are not in the board get to come. People are welcomed to join the board meeting on Mondays. We look at the market and do PWP presentations about what we should buy/sell. We also do weekly news updates, educational pieces, and have guest speakers.

We exercise real money that has been in the club for years! Our current portfolio is worth over $400,000. Tell this kid to come lafayette already!"

So there you go!

Taylor

Hi All!

It has come to my attention that some students may want to contact me privately with a question. If this applies to you, you may private message me on this site, or you may email me at brownt@lafayette.edu.

Thanks!

Taylor

Thanks, Capt, for tracking down information about the Investment Club. Everything about it sounds great, and, as far as my son is concerned, represents a big check in the “plus column” for Lafayette.

Hi Taylor,

I am an admitted student and I am enrolling to Lafayette!

I had a question about transportation: How exactly do you go to Philadelphia and NYC from Easton? I hope there is a train or a bus…

Hi Taylor
My daughter is an admitted and enrolled student. Online it says items such as roommate forms will be sent to her Lafayette email account…is that just her banner self service account or are we missing something?
Thanks!

Just checking in to say that we sent my daughter’s deposit in this morning and she is so excited to be going to Lafayette ! We are headed up again Saturday to take another tour and pick up some Lafayette wear for her.
Thanks Taylor for all of your information and help.

They will be getting their email accounts, I think it was sent to them through snail mail, but could be wrong. So they should pay attention as they receive information from Laf. There was a slight bug with my son’s so he got it through email.

Glad your daughter is excited about Lafayette. D is finishing her first year and loves it. Just be aware that after you send in your deposit, don’t expect to hear back from the school right away. Not sure if this applies to Laf, as I can not recall, but in general, many colleges are still shaping their classes and a lot of the forms etc… for the incoming class won’t be mailed out until June or July. Probably won’t find out her roommate is until late July. She can get a lot of info from the admitted students Facebook group. Congrats!

Just to add on to jbroadway’s comment. Go to the Class of 2016 Facebook page and go back through it. You will definitely find when they started getting their email accounts and the other information.

Hi Robcol,

Not sure about transportation to Philly, but there is a bus from downtown Easton to NYC that runs several times each day. You can check out the Transbridge bus website for further info.

Hi Robcol,

There are buses in downtown Easton, PA that go to both NYC and Philly.

All other transportation information can be found here–

[Transportation · Campus Life · Lafayette College](http://www.lafayette.edu/campus-life/about-easton/transportation/)

As for the Lafayette College emails, those should be sent to you via “snail mail” soon if they have not already.

Taylor

Sorry, been super busy this past month. Back online now. If you’ve got any questions, shoot!

thanks Taylor and sail28. Which bus line do you guys prefer? Trans-bridge or Greyhound?

@robcol–

I do not have any personal experience with either bus line, but I have heard that many people prefer Greyhound.

Taylor

We’ve used Transbridge many times and haven’t had any problems.

My son also uses Transbridge and seems happy.
