Has anyone had recent experience with the Summer Transition to College Program at Landmark College?
My son has ADHD and executive functioning challenges and yet has been able to maintain a high GPA due to being very bright, working hard to compensate and getting generous deadline extensions. He just is in a constant state of stress and until recently would be very behind on work and sleep deprived. He has just been recently diagnosed and having a hard time accepting this. However, he is willing to go to the program. I am hoping it would help him understand the need to actively work to help himself manage his challenges and give him effective tools to do so. I know there was a thread from 2013 which I read and did not look favorable. I would appreciate any input! Thank you.
momofml, My son participated in a Landmark “boot camp” (a week or two, can’t remember) in Berkeley for students with ADHD (and/or other issues) entering college or already in college and having some challenges. My son, who has ADHD, participated the summer before his freshman year at UCSB, and he did find it helpful. An ongoing ADHD coach (online or in-person) could also be helpful, in addition to mindfulness training and a good nutrition/exercise/sleep regimen.
Thank you so much! I just saw your reply today. My son will be attending the program this summer. It is comforting to hear from someone whose son found it helpful. I appreciate your taking the time to give feedback on the program and other sources of support! Just to mention, My son went to Inward Bound Mindfulness Education camp last year and loved it. He has also worked with an Executive Functioning coach. Is there a particular online ADHD coach/compan you recommend?
Is anyone still reading these posts? I have a son who is very bright (high SATs, good grades in high school etc.) but also very ADHD and struggling in college. He is not sleeping very well. I am thinking about sending him to Landmark for the summer (this is the summer after his freshman year.) Also, what advice do you all have about good executive coaches, what helps ADHD students sleep better (I am thinking my son needs medication to sleep, and will ask Dr., but want to hear what has helped for other kids.)
Many thanks
My student attended Mercyhurst University summer transition program for LD students before staring summer classes— amazing six week program and they also earn college credit. It provided the support to transition to college before the general student body arrived on campus. My student is finishing the sophomore year, has support but loves the school. Their LD program is amazing as well as their program to support students with autism. During my initial search of schools, Mercyhurst University was not on the top ten list of schools with LD support/autism but yet is has provided an amazing experience for my student who is also involved in several extracurricular activities. Parents/students must look beyond the top ten list to find those hidden gem schools. It is truly about the “fit.”
