language help! Spanish or Italian?

I love languages too much...I wish I could find a job in which all I had to do was learn languages....but oh well.

Anyway, I'm a linguistics major and I plan to be in school for the next two years before finsihing everything. I think I will minor in French as well and I am working on a certificate in W. European Studies.

I have studied the following languages: Spanish (3 years in high school....but forgot everything!), Italian (3 semesters at University), Hungarian (6 week intensive), and French (1 year in France...intensive course 20 hrs/week....started from scratch and now at upper intermediate level).

I am currently enrolled in Italian 3 (Intermediate) and as much as I love the language, I miss learning Spanish! I miss it a lot and I kinda regret taking Italian freshman year instead of continuing my Spanish. My best language right now is French and that is definitely a keeper....but I wanna take Spanish!!! I think I would have to start from the beginning again, but thats okay.

the truth is, I like all three languages and would like to do them all, but I just don't have time in my schedule and I know that after I finish college I won't ahve ANY time at all..so I feel like its now or never if I want to at least continue with Spanish.

So, shoudl I drop Italian and sign up for Spanish (if space is available)? Or should I just leave it the way things are? I wat to learn Spanish mainly because I like the language...plus it can be more practical, but thats not the main reason I am doing it.

Spanish Is A Dumb Language.

I think you should continue with Italian. Spanish and Italian are really similar, and I think you will be bored with Spanish if you start at the very beginning. Plus, in the future, when you need to use Spanish, you past spanish skills plus your present Italian knowledge will really help you, and you won't really be at a disadvantage anyway. I think you're fine the way you are. If you still want to take spanish, maybe you can do some summer classes?

I might be able to take spanish in the summer, but I am not sure. I plan to go to summer school an dtake a full load but I intended to take only gen ed reqs during that time so I could get them out of the way (I know I shouldda done them earlier but I was too busy taking stuff that I actually wanted to take....heh.

wow. that's one of the most ignorant comments i've seen so far on cc.

well spanish is more practical, but learning italian will help A LOT in learning spanish. i'm a native spanish speaker and never have had an italian class in my life. however, i've watched several italian movies in which ji didn't even nee the caption and i can read the language pretty well too. i find it fascinating. i'll probably take italian as a language in college just to learn how to speak it.

i think you should just keep what you have.

Sorry, but being forced to take a year of another language which I hated and will never use in HS. I have come to hate it and think its stupid.

Only language anybody needs to know is English.

Trust me, you will NOT fall behind in Spanish. Like you, I am so interested in learning about languages (more of cultural aspect than the syntax, I think?). I was originally going to have a background in 5 languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, and ASL) after this semester. I was going to take Russian and Hebrew for languages. But after checking out the work at my new school and the thought of having a bunch of grammar and vocab lists on my mind wasn't too appealing. And my school's Spanish department allowed me to place into intermediate level after being out for three years with four years of studying Spanish in middle/high school. I haven't looked back since- I love my Spanish class and listening to my professor. A lot of things came back to me so I did only have to study a little bit to refresh my mind.

So, I really doubt that you actually "forgot" anything, especially if you have a good text to help you along. So just see what are the pre-req's for classes above Introductory Spanish. If you can get in something past first and second semester, by all it means, drop Italian and go for Spanish. Otherwise, stay in Italian and read CNN en espanol :)
