This might end up being a really dumb thing to worry about, but right now I'm unfamiliar with how everything as far as credits and requirements work out in college.

I tested out of one semester of Spanish, meaning to fulfill the language requirement I would need to take three classes in three semesters of it. The problem is, I absolutely despise Spanish and would dread taking it for another year and a half.

What I would really love to do is take American Sign Language. The problem that is presented here is the fact that it would take up more time. The ASL course sequence involves taking five classes over the course of four semesters. I plan on starting first semester sophomore year, as the co-requisite class for the Intro to ASL class is not offered during the winter semester.

My issue is, how will these two extra classes taken during my sophomore & junior years affect my ability to comfortably complete all the courses required for my intended major (Earth & Environmental Sciences) as well as all of my electives? I'm just worried I won't complete them in time or in a way that would make sense without taking pricey summer classes.

I might be worrying about nothing here, but it's late at night and I'm a worried incoming freshman. This isn't an issue I'll have to address for probably another year, but I don't want to spend that entire time with this in the back of my mind.

I apologize for going off topic, but what are you planning to do with the Earth and Environmental Sciences degree? I’m also planning on double majoring in biology/earth and environmental sciences if possible.

To be honest, I’m not sure. I don’t feel bad for saying this though, because the reason I’m not sure is because from what I’ve seen as far as career paths following that degree go, I’m interested in many of them. I plan on narrowing down that list and really figuring out what I want most after I declare my major. Grad school is always an option I’ll consider as well, as there are grad programs offered in that field.

Well you can use prereqs toward distribution. Looks to me like MSA and NS credits there (Math 115, chem/physics/bio), especially if you do B of Science. That leaves you with the 7 credits HU SS + 3 more. Then there’s intro writing and ULWR.

So again if you do BS degree, just eyeballing it looks like your major leaves you around 40/60. So that leaves you with 20 science credits plus 35 ish for electives. Seems like you can easily fit in 5 classes of ASL, but depends on your priorities.

You should have plenty of time to meet your foreign language and other degree requirements during the four years as long as you give a little thought to it. I would not recommend continuing with a language or major that you despise. There are too many choices available at U-M so you should have no problem finding a field of study that interests you. You should also be able to find something in life to do with it.

I didn’t realize that ASL satisfied the LSA language requirement but I checked and it does.

Thanks a lot for the responses! It makes me feel a lot better about the whole thing.
