HS graduation is rapidly approaching and the plan was to get a good laptop for my son's graduation that that he will bring to MIT in the fall. Today he announced that he thinks a Tablet would be his first choice. I know squat about Tablets and would very much appreciate your thoughts / concerns / praise and criticisms, as well as a comparison of the merits of Tablets over Laptops or whatever you can throw in to the discussion. He feels as though a Tablet will be very easy to bring to class and make notes and very handy during group work. My concern is support. Thanks in advance.

Hmm. The best option is Toshiba hybride, I think.

I have a toshiba M200, which you can use both as a laptop and a tablet. I will admit I use it as a laptop most of the time, but I love being able to use it as a tablet in class. I love having all of my notes in one place, not having to worry about paper in general. the only thing i regret is that ibm hasnt come out with their tablet soon enough. Also, a 12 inch screen does take some time to get used to.

i'm not quite sure what you mean by support. it uses professional, so any windows issues would be supported. plus, a lot of mit classes give out tablets for a semester, so someone somewhere has to know how to fix problems.

Anyone else have anything to add? He is leaning toward the Motion LE1600 with all the doo-dads. It's expensive and I don't want to commit if it's not right.

a motion is definitely a bit on the expensive side, but many people do seem to love it. if you want to learn more about tablets, you should go to tabletpcbuzz, they have a forum with tablet users who would probably give you a better idea about the right tablet.
