I'm an incoming freshman about to start in two weeks or so. I still have not gotten a laptop. Laptops bought through Dell, even with Santa Clara's deal program, are far more expensive than a pretty equitable Toshiba or Sony laptop that I can get at Best Buy. My question is this: Assuming I get a laptop outside of the university program, are there any Santa Clara specific software programs I need? (I have Microsoft Office and can easily acquire Antivirus, warranty, etc. all still for far less than what I would have to pay through Dell) So, are there any hidden problems with getting one without the university program?

No–go and buy the laptop that is affordable for you.

I’ve seen every kind of laptop, new, old, high priced, affordable, etc used on campus. There are no special requirements. The wireless internet at SCU can be accessed by laptops, smart phones, and touch pads of all brands.
