Hey all I’m going to be attending BU next year and majoring in International Relations and possibly minoring in journalism. I have an HP dm4 laptop which seems fine for IR, but I’m not sure for the journalism minor. Does anyone know if I could use this in my journalism courses? Thanks in advance!

Bump anyone??

Not familiar with your laptop, but what’s the concern?

Apparently for COM they suggest a Mac to use.

How about for SMG?

You don’t need any special laptop for most things at BU. I’m a computer science major and use the exact same laptop-- HP Pavilion dm4-- that you do.

Perhaps I’m unfamiliar with what some advanced courses of journalism entails, but is there any special software that you need? Chances are that any laptop on which you can install a web browser and a text editor will suit 100% of your needs.

To go on a soapbox for a bit (feel free to boo, jeer, or just skip over this): there is a culture of Macintosh computers at BU that I don’t understand. I guess it’s fashionable. I don’t see what’s so fashionable about people dropping $1,000+ on a MacBook Pro when they are not professional anything. They use an expensive, well-equipped machine for writing papers and surfing the web. And that’s it. Now, I do know that Macs come with some pretty handy software for things such as video-editing, among others. If that’s up your alley, then maybe it’s worth it. Otherwise, you can find a solid laptop for $500-$700 that will get you through four years of dragging it down Comm Ave.

Good luck in your search, and welcome to BU!

Thanks so much for the post! And I think Com likes the software of certain programs on the Macs. If I was to minor in journalism I was only looking to do print, which I doubt would need anything specific other than Word, but I could be wrong, that’s why I ask.

Call the advising office! Be aware that there is a lot of walking at BU - watch your size and weight.

The laptop I have now is small and compact. Perfect for the walking

which hp dm4 do you have?

HP dm4 2180-us

i am kinda worry about this since i am familiar with windows and using thinkpad…many of my friends suggest me to use mac instead.Besides, my major is COM.
any suggestion at all??
